Not sure how much time you will have or what area you are staying, but here are a few things that most would recommend:
1.
Negro Leagues Museum. If you are a baseball fan this is a must. In the summer, the museum closes down to provide private tours to the Major League teams that come into town to play the Royals. I'd say it takes a couple of hours to get through. The American Jazz Museum is right next door.
2.
National World War 1 Museum and Liberty Memorial. If you love history, this is a great museum. It's not quite as large as the WW2 Museum in New Orleans, but it will still take 2-3 hours to get through.
3.
College Basketball Experience and Hall of Fame. If you are a college basketball fan this is a great exhibit and is located downtown next to the T-Mobile Center.
4.
President Harry S. Truman Library and Museum. This just recently re-opened after undergoing renovations. I have not been to see it since its re-opened.
5.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (referred to as "The Nelson")
. This is a great art museum and it's free (with the exception of the paid exhibits).
6. If museums aren't your thing, much like any other city, there are tons of microbreweries and coffee houses. This weekend, the KC Brewfest is being held at Union Station and WWE Smackdown is at the T-Mobile Center.
7. Other things that come to mind:
- Jesse James birthplace (north of the city in Kearney, MO)
- Kansas City Mafia tour
- The Country Club Plaza (upscale shopping and high-end restaurants (mix of chain and local)
- The River Market and the Crossroads Districts feature more local restaurants
- Casinos (Hollywood, Harrahs, Ameristar, Argosy, and Ballys)
- The AFC Championship at Arrowhead Stadium (tough ticket to find)
8.
BBQ Restaurants: There are tons of KC-style BBQ restaurants and joints all over the city. Everyone here has a preference, but I will just list the ones that I prefer.
- Q39. Not sure if they still do this, but you used to be able to make reservations online. It's a nice atmosphere and an actual sit-down restaurant with waiters, etc. Everyone has been raving for the last few years about Q39. The only thing that I did not like is that the portions are not as big as other places.
- Jack Stack BBQ (at Freight House or Country Club Plaza - both are good experiences). This one is my family's favorite. It's a nice atmosphere and a sit-down restaurant (like Q39) but with more menu items and bigger portions.
- Char Bar. You can't go wrong with this place either. It's also a sit-down/waiter-style restaurant and they take reservations.
- Other popular walk up and order BBQ joints are: Slaps (Kansas City, KS), Joe's KC (was featured on Anthony Bourdain shows), Gates, Arthur Bryants (Presidential candidates have traditionally stopped here on their campaign visits), and one that people have been talking about recently is Scott's Kitchen (up near the airport) - but they do have some strange hours as they also serve breakfast. I am sure that I am leaving off some other good ones. I don't go out for BBQ much anymore since I bought a smoker three years ago.
9. Other Restaurants: No particular order
- Italian: You can't go wrong with any of the following: Farina, Ragazza, Garozzos, Bella Napoli, and Lidias
- Mexican: I lived in Arizona for a while and I don't think KC has very good Mexican food. My favorites are Jarocho Authentic Mexican Seafood and Rudy's Tenampa Taqueria. I have been told that Kansas City, Kansas has some very good Mexican joints but I have not ventured over there.
- Asian: For Thai Food - Baramee is good and located in the crossroads district. For Korean: Kobi Q. For Vietnamese - Vietnam Cafe and Nguyen Pho&Grill are my favorites. For Chinese and Japanese - some of our favorites closed during the pandemic so don't have a good recommendation.
- Other places I like: Gram & Dun, Rockhill Grille, Summit Grill and Bar, and Gordon Ramsay Steak at Harrahs Casino.
