Recruiting forum off topic thread (no politics, covid, or hot button issues)

Yup. You can question the company all you want but employees are a reflection of a company. This wasn’t just about one distasteful comment about the Burton incident. They probably just took one look at that Twitter history and was like yeah, we can’t have employees with his type of character here. The Sherrif comment alone would have been enough for me to cut ties.
Garbage

Well if that is true, then they should have just fired him. They made a point of publicly announcing they were firing him for THIS.

There is always a last straw. It is rarely the full story. The full story isn't really anybody's business, and there could be legal issues in airing it.

My point remains. You don't fire good productive employees for one dumb Twitter posting. Labor market is too tight for that and the legal environment makes it too risky.

Yes. What does that have to do with him stating what his favorite line is? Favorite line or not, you (people in general) are an absolute idiot if you post that on social media. 99% of the people who read it are gonna peg you as a racist idiot, or at the very least, an absolute idiot. If you give off the perception, people are gonna question anyone associated with you.
I agree he's an idiot but I also think it's so weak to go digging through someone's old posts to try to justify something completely different. He should know better. I don't know that it's worth upending his life over.

I just don't think that a stupid social media post is a window into this person's soul. Maybe he's awful. But this all strikes me as too much.

So...you discriminate against people for non PC things they believe and say...that is cool.
I was wondering how far this actually goes since he said it’s done all the time. What exactly do people look for? Religion? Political affiliation? Activities? What do you look for?

They did.
That is not all they did. Are you one of these virtue signaling saints? I don't think so, you don't seem like that kind of guy.

If you wanna fire the guy for not doing his job or causing trouble with co-workers...then do it, but no need to do that other 🦬💩.

I guess the guy should just lose everything he has for making a dumb comment that some people don't like.

I think that is utter 🦬💩

I agree. He's just an idiot. If he's dumb enough to make those stupid comments on social media, there is no telling what other type of stupid stuff his employer has already seen.

He gifted them with the cover. They used it. Simple as that.

It's just like Pruitt. He was fired for McDonald's bags, right? No. That was just the convenient and defensible "reason".

Employees I hire are a direct representation of my company. You can’t discriminate based on politics, but if someone is a disgusting POS online, I don’t want them as a representative…..pretty cool huh.

A pattern of poor behavior and bad decisions. It isn't always a political crusade. A lot of companies check social media and have social media policies. If you're saying completely inappropriate things all the time and being an a-hole, then you might get fired. I've explained it to people this way...if you want to do drugs and have a job, then you better find a job with a company that doesn't care. If you want to literally say and do anything you want online and have a job, make sure to find a job with a company that doesn't care.

From what I saw on this guy's Twitter, he's been a bit of an a-hole and said some things that seriously reflect poorly on him. Since he used his real name and had his employer listed on social media, they got drug into it and put in a bad spot. Don't do something that publicly embarrasses your employer if you don't want to get fired. I don't think this was a "cancel culture" situation (which does exist on all sides of the political spectrum). There was a lot more on his account than just that one comment...which that comment alone shouldn't get anyone fired in my opinion.
