Recruiting Forum: Official Alabama Pre-Game/Game Thread

Well three reasons that doesn't work for me:

1. The play prior was a jail break, an indicator that when they peeled their ears back, we weren't going to be able to block them.

2. When you do a straight dropback, you basically take away 66% of your offense. They knew we weren't going to run the ball so play action wasn't going to work. Dobbs ability to get up field was limited because of the rush up the middle. And we know Dobbs weakness as a qb is his ability to sit back in the pocket a deliver the ball.

3. When you sprint him out you make the defense come up and defend the run thereby taking defenders out of pass protection. If they don't come up he can get what he can and get out of bounds to stop the clock. We used the sprint out earlier in the game and it was very effective.

Now if you look at a previous post of mine, I didn't the play calling throughout the game was all that bad. I said no coach/coordinator is going to hit 100%. I've made it clear I am not impressed with Debord. If posters disagree that is ok because if everybody agreed on everything, this would be a pretty dull place around here.

I had the privilege to speak with VFL that played during the Peyton years this morning after church. Obviously, he's ticked about the losses as we are. He's actually harder on the coaches than many on here are. He believes as I do that the two min offensive play calls are dumb. Not my word, his. He says it's a pattern in all the losses. He also believes as I do that we are still 2-3 highly ranked recruiting classes from having the quality depth that we need to be a championship contender. TIFWIW.

I get that same opportunity pre, during and post game with a VFL and former HS and college coach. Although we don't agree 100% of the time (probably 90%), it is clear this staff is not elite yet on game day. The last two minutes in a tight one usually reveals if they are. Not saying they won't get there eventually. Just not there yet.

So, do you think they are getting better? It appears to me that they have improved over the course of the season. jmo

I've not tried to hide the fact that I'm no fan of Debord. The question is, is there other OCs out there that would do a better job than Debord has with the talent at hand? I believe there are many. Is it provable? No, it's just my opinion. I think you are 100% right as to the end of the game. That's when OCs make their money. Two min on the clock with a chance to score and win the game. That's what separates the good from the elite.

As to being in agreement, I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I try to remember one thing when I am in disagreement with another Vol fan, we all want the same thing. We just have different ideas as to how to get there. Some are more passionate than others. Some express themselves in ways that can be irritating. But the common thing is we are Vol fans that want to see OUR Vols at the top again.

Much better. The 3rd and 10 before the final missed field goal was the only obvious mistake in my opinion. You have to get half of that 10 yards against a defense that's playing way off to prevent the first down to go for an easier 4th down or give your struggling kicker a few more yards.

Agree. We need to treat every possession like it's four downs in that "no man's land" area of the field. Convert or let it go over on downs. Outside of 35 yards, I wouldn't even trot Medley out there at this point.
