Recruiting Forum: Official Alabama Pre-Game/Game Thread

It was cover two disguised as man free pre-snap.
That's great scouting. Call your defense and you get that certain formation in down and distance and you take your shot and just hope your guys make the play
Great call!

There is still no convincing me otherwise that Evan Berry shouldn't be getting involved some kind of way on offense.

Best defensive game plan all year. Martin allowed for a lot of defensive versatility.

It's a 10-15 yard fade. CBs are on islands regardless of the help. Passes were thrown perfect.

The worst part is both of the throws on bama's last drive were under throws that just happened to work out perfectly. Our cb's were in great shape on both if they hadn't been under thrown.

I was just talking to my cousin about the game. Martin would've gotten that pass he had he not tripped. Sutton had no chance with how that pass was thrown. When Ridley turned his head around he immediately jumped. In press man you are trying to get your head around when the WR looks back. That's why he was trying to make a play on the man instead of the ball. Coker throws the fade better than any other pass that he throws.

Again Coker said those were both under throws that happened to work out perfectly for bama.

The under throws will get you a PI. That's why I couldn't say anything when it happened. The first one on Martin was just a CB tripping and falling. He would've gotten that one. Defense is much different with Martin opposite Sutton. I saw that when they were rotating him in earlier this year.

Rest of schedule:

UK: Got friggin blasted tonight by an MSU team that we would beat by a touchdown, IMO.

USC: Awful. Like a slightly better Mizzou/Vandy. Does nothing well and doesn't have a head coach.

North Texas: Guaranteed blowout win.

Mizzou: Perhaps the worst SEC opponent we have faced since Vandy 2010, but without the motivation to beat us that Vandy always has. There's no excuse to not absolutely skull drag them. Their offense is historically putrid in the SEC and perhaps by NCAA standards in general. If we score more than 10 points, we will win comfortably.

Vandy: Slightly, slightly better than last year, but their offense is hot garbage. If we can make it to this game healthy, we can get out to a 17-21 point lead and sit on it and never feel threatened. Start resting up for the bowl game.

I don't think it can be stated enough how imperative it is to win out. Losing to any of these horrible teams can't happen.

Theres no reason we don't win our remaining games. None.

eazy, since you know some of the players, would you say their spirits are still high on what they can do? I think we really have to focus his week, or UK could be our trap game. Yes, I know UK is terrible, but if we have a huge letdown, anything can happen. Night game in Lexington, blackout for Halloween...if we come in and play flat, then we could let them believe they can win. Need to impose our will early and often.

UK fans are starting to fall off the bandwagon again. With keeneland havi g a big event during the day and them getting smoked by msu, i could b wrong but I think the crowd may be a little quieter then it would be if they would have beaten aubby or msu. They are seeing a repeat of last year with their remaining schedule. They are deff down right now. IMO, our guys will be ready

I hope so. Don't get me wrong...I'm not scared of UK...only worried we will come in flat, like we did against Arky after UF loss. If we can get to rolling next week, I think we roll through our last 5 games and win each contest by a minimum of 14.

Two hour nap done, and I gotta run off to church, but here are my thoughts.

1. Ain't even mad: Always disappointing to lose, but the team is improving, coaching decisions look better, and if you match rosters, player for player, Bama is better and more experienced, and we just about took their milk money. Well played, Vols. We're comin'...

2. Justin Martin: Lacks experience, but good grief, the talent is there. On the Bama drive to win, he was in position to INT or bat the ball down, and the worst, and got tripped up as the ball came in. Wow! That close...

3. Cory Vereen:
Best game ever for him. Awesome game. Keep that junk up.

4. Pass Rush: Jancek did an awesome job with the blitz today. Bama's OL had their handful all night, though I am not sure a single holding penalty was called. How many sacks? 6? Gotta make those 15 yard sacks and not 1 yard, after Coker escaped, but dang fine job.

5. Experience: The OL did a fine job tonight, but in the end, the experience of the Bama DL, when they needed it, came through. Big elephants plowing through our OL at the end of the game, but wait till our boys get a little salt. True freshies, we've got out there. They'll get it.

6. Medley: All we needed was a par, 2/3. We got 0, and they weren't even close. No kicker is perfect, but 3 games have been lost (in part, never in full) to missed kicks. OK, FL, Bama all would have been ended with an extra 3... or two.

7. Kamara: I loved seeing him getting involved more in the game. Would have liked a bit more, but good game on limited touches.

8. Pearson:
Two targets on the first drive, then none for the rest of the game, IIRC. Get the man a few more touches please.

Great game coaches and players. We will be winning these games in the future. Undefeated the rest of the way should absolutely be the expectation for this team. :hi: Would be a solid year

Left out Hurd was a beast as usual.

I was mad as **** earlier but I think everyone can see the progress that UT has made.

Maybe the people saying we weren't serious contenders until 2016 were right back in the preseason

I think without some of the injuries, we would be closer. Losing Curt at Oklahoma hurt us A TON. He might have made a difference in 2 or 3 of those games.

Curt would've dominated in this game from LB/DE. Coker would've really been getting killed. If he and Tuttle were playing that game would've been over. Those are two elite ball players.

So......we should all know by now.....the Randolph INT was great defensive play calling and execution. It was a play designed to fool Coker into throwing THAT pass and it worked perfectly.

It was NOT cover 2 disguised as man to man....It was cover 6 disguised as cover 2 and the whole thing was a designed play that was called at the perfect time.

On a side note. I really like Eric Ainge breaking down these plays on the Butch Jones show.

To inVol's question that no one has answered. The reasoning on using a straight drop back instead of a roll out at the end is somewhat two fold:

1) The straight drop allows for the QB and WRs to make use of the entire field instead of just half. In that end game situation, you want as many options as possible. In all honesty, Dobbs might have panicked a little because he didn't seem to view the entire field.

2) Despite the sacks that happened, the straight drop allows you to better protect the QB/ give him more time. Bama was doing a good job of spying Dobbs which really hurt our ability to run the roll out pass option plays to their full extent.

Debord hasn't been all world, but he hasn't been bad either. You seem to be focusing in on a few plays that you disagree with and applying that to the entire situation. We moved the ball on Bama pretty well yesterday.

Well three reasons that doesn't work for me:

1. The play prior was a jail break, an indicator that when they peeled their ears back, we weren't going to be able to block them.

2. When you do a straight dropback, you basically take away 66% of your offense. They knew we weren't going to run the ball so play action wasn't going to work. Dobbs ability to get up field was limited because of the rush up the middle. And we know Dobbs weakness as a qb is his ability to sit back in the pocket a deliver the ball.

3. When you sprint him out you make the defense come up and defend the run thereby taking defenders out of pass protection. If they don't come up he can get what he can and get out of bounds to stop the clock. We used the sprint out earlier in the game and it was very effective.

Now if you look at a previous post of mine, I didn't the play calling throughout the game was all that bad. I said no coach/coordinator is going to hit 100%. I've made it clear I am not impressed with Debord. If posters disagree that is ok because if everybody agreed on everything, this would be a pretty dull place around here.

I had the privilege to speak with VFL that played during the Peyton years this morning after church. Obviously, he's ticked about the losses as we are. He's actually harder on the coaches than many on here are. He believes as I do that the two min offensive play calls are dumb. Not my word, his. He says it's a pattern in all the losses. He also believes as I do that we are still 2-3 highly ranked recruiting classes from having the quality depth that we need to be a championship contender. TIFWIW.

The throw to Malone on the last TD drive was a throw in traffic on a roll out. What a great play. We were in a position to win and were matching Bama talent wise. Where's the moxie? The coaches deserve great credit for the team they are putting on the field. Still the riddle is not solved. We need to keep the heat on.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the pass to Malone was a roll out.

I just don't agree that the simple solution in the 2 minute drill was to roll him out. As a friend of mine texted me early in the game when Dobbs was sacked on a roll out, roll outs are designed for quick passes, and Dobbs doesn't throw it quickly. Even if he hits it, he hits the WR late. He almost waited too long on the Kamara rub that tied the UGA game.

Dobbs is still learning. It's a fine line because we want him to use his feet, but he misses some golden opportunities. Malone was open on the Wolf out of bounds catch, and Hurd had slipped out and was open by 15 yards on the first sack in the last 2 minutes. You certainly need to mix it up and use Dobbs' feet, but at some point, your QB has to drop back and step up and throw the football. That's what a QB does.

Maybe I have it confused with another Malone pass where Dobbs rolled right.

Thought we were facing a good defense so them getting pressure in an obvious passing situation wasn't a surprise. They made the plays at the end. Time to move on to killing Kentucky.

My bad. That one was on the scoring drive was a drop back. The TD to Smith was a roll out left. OK I get it. Its KY week. The run begins.
