Tough one to take. Coming into the year, my head told me that we're still a year away from a talent/experience standpoint. My heart ignored my head and invested itself anyway. At halftime, it looked like my heart was right. Still may be... Lots of season left. But this one couldn't get much more painful. Long post forthcoming.
Something isn't right with this offense. I honestly don't know what it is. Hurd is a monster and is exempt from the following criticism.
The WRs aren't producing at a level that reflects their ability. And I know we all want to scream at the coaches for that, but it's not that simple. Could Jones and Debord utilize them better? Absolutely. But the OL struggles still limit us there, I don't believe our guys can consistently get separation, and I don't believe Dobbs has the arm talent to 'throw his man open' so to speak. So that's on everybody involved.
We constantly lament or QBs' inability to connect on deep balls. On the other hand, when is the last time you saw one of our WRs just blow his man away from the line of scrimmage? North ran a 4.4 in high school. Malone is fast, Pig is fast, Jennings is fast. Yet they don't get separation on any consistent basis at all. On every deep attempt, the corner is right in their pocket. That feels like it shouldn't be the case, especially with our ever-present 'threat' of screen passes.
Dobbs. If his first read isn't there, he gets rid of the ball. Does he even have progressions? Is this another reflection of our OL's inability to pass protect long enough to find the second option, or can he just not go through reads?
OL. Don't even know what to say. It's hard to point at this guy or that one and call for his backup, because as often as not they were ALL getting beat. Dobbs can make one guy miss. He can't dodge the whole ****ing DL along with a couple of blitzers, and that's what he was having to do tonight. they've improved somewhat in the running game (though they didn't do **** for Kamara), but they played as bad as they ever have in pass pro from about the second quarter onward.
So many questions right now, and none of them easy to answer. I do think that I'll go back to trusting my head. Team 119 will have to prove it deserves it before I'll give up my heart again.
