I've been going back and forth on my prediction on the game all week. Last year's start, right or wrong, has been weighing on me. While I respect the heck out of JG it's difficult seeing him lead us to victory. Having said that does he really need to? I think, as usual our o-line play is the key to victory. If SC is forced to bring extra people to stop the run and put pressure on JG I think we win in a dominate fashion. I think Chaney will be able to exploit that with play calling and be able to create matchup problems for the SC defense. Then that begs the question can JG execute that plan/play? I am encouraged that this being his second year under Pruitt we will see some improvement in the mental side of his game.
I don't think we'll be able to line up and just pound SC in the running game. Muschamp is way too good of a DC to not be able to adjust to that. If he can't stop it with his base defense, he'll send extra bodies to stop it which takes us back to my earlier point. I think Muschamp will do whatever it takes to make JG beat us through the air. If JG was truly a dual threat, my confidence would be higher that we handle SC with relative ease. Maurer brings that ability but it's been said he's injured. Not sure if Shrout has that ability in the limited action we've seen from him.
As to our defense, we really don't know what to expect from SC. They seem to be limited from a skill position standpoint and with a new QB and OC, it only adds more questions. Again, I think it goes to the trenches. I think the game will be decided by the Vols ability to stop the run and pressure the QB. If we have to send extra bodies to do that then the focus shifts to our secondary and their ability one-on-one. Given SC's lack of talent at WR I think that bodies well for us.
Mistakes/penalties/turnovers just might be the deciding factors in this game. Given the circumstances with the limited practices and covid stuff, i expect both teams to be sloppy. My hope is that it evens out.
I've wondered about the limited fans in attendance and how that affects the home field advantage. Does it take away the bite from the home field? I don't know and it will be interesting to follow.
I still don't have a good feel for the game. No outcome except the vols being defeated soundly would surprise me. My brain tells me the Vols should handle business easily but my heart knows that this is the SEC and the two starting games from last year are still stuck in my craw.
All that being said, I think in true Tennessee fashion, it will be a nail biter through 3 1/2 quarters with the Vols pulling it out with a SC turnover and a pounding running game by the end as the SC defense is worn out.
Vols win 24-17.
