Recruiting Forum: Official Texas A&M Pre-Game/Game Thread

Sounds like Barnett could have a huge day. I hope we can win the trenches, everything else will fall into place from there. I think we see a high scoring game. 41-38 Vols.

Just being curious here and looking to learn a bit myself - do you guys feel at least a little disappointed Shoop's defense hasn't performed better overall? I know we're missing top players, but based on a lot of the talk prior to the season it seemed everyone felt he would take our D to the next level. I'm not trying to criticize, just wondering what y'all think the reasons are for us not being as dominant as expected. Scheme? Coaching change/style? Key injuries? Sleepwalking? TIA

I'm guessing it's a little bit of everything. Team learning new scheme. Coach learning strengths and weaknesses of the team. Coach reacting to scheme of the opposing offense. Then came the injuries, which dictated additional adjustments.

It hasn't always been pretty, but they've won the games. They only had one really bad late game situation, but the offense bailed them out.

This game will be interesting.

Honestly, I've been fine with it. It isn't the prettiest, but its resulted in wins, and has been outstanding in 2nd halves.

Preseason, if you laid out the guys on Defense that this team could not lose it would be: JRM, Sutton, Barnett, and Kirkland. They lost 75% those and have still managed Ws against Florida and UGA. It isn't fair for me to move the goalposts because Florida or Georgia look a bit weaker than expected. I wanted those Ws before the year and we've got them.

I was never worried after each one of those guy went down.

He might get a flag thrown for that.

Gaulden hits technically right. He hits chest high on his kill shots. He's blasted someone in all our games. Appy State, Florida, Virginia Tech, and Georgia. And he's shutdown to very good slots in McKenzie and Powell. He's making them go to reverses to get them the ball. He's the third best defender right now behind Barnett and Vereen. IMO

Agreed....I was kidding.

Agree completely. This is why the D suffered more than it should have last year when he went down. I will go as far as to say 1-2 games more would have been won with him in the line-up. He's just a football player. Could tell it in HS just like JJ.

He erases other players' mistakes. Barnett and Vereen prevent others from making mistakes by blowing up the plays.

Wait ... what? You have some classics in that rant. Holy cow.

It was a simple question with an honest answer. That's all. No reason to bring my wet dreams (which do NOT include Saban) into this. lol

I..am..mostly..just messing with you :) I thought everybody in the RF could translate emoji by now. You have to, to understand anything Butchna posts.. :)

I'm starting to wonder how aggressive Shoop is going to be.

We may be better off letting the QB take his 57% chances, then letting him escape for 1st downs when pressure is applied. I'd say, key on the RB, play tight coverage in the secondary, and make him beat you with his arm, with the occasional well-timed blitz mixed in.

I'm thinking we see a lot of delayed blitzes with the linebackers. We need to hit him early, and a delayed blitz allows the linebacker to pick his gap and make sure there isn't an open lane to scramble into

We haven't been real aggressive all the time. The D-line has been applying a lot of pressure.

I did some more digging. It looks like they use 5-man protection most of the time. Backs only pass block about 30% of snaps and they are 4-wide on 73% of their snaps.
If that's the case then I see our DL going nuts, especially DB9. But I also wouldn't be surprised if we see more blocking from the RB this game.

Sometimes I've felt he has been overly aggressive, but adjusted well. I think your thoughts are on point. We may be better served by forcing Knight to throw it rather than forcing him to scramble. Key to our D may be contain, contain, contain.

I can't help but feel a little nervous about this game with the injuries and how we tackled vs uga. Now Hurd may be out. It's a lot to overcome by itself, but on the road, vs a top 10 opponent...it would be a huge win for us. I think we get it. CBJ and co. have recruited the depth we need to get through all of this.

I haven't noticed if we've stunted the D line much. We've done some zone blitzes. Has anyone noticed if we've stunted much?

If I'm Butch I use the LSU vs UF situation as extra motivation for this game. "Leave no doubt and don't let the Gators sneak into Atlanta when they don't deserve to be there"

D line stuns a lot, sometimes they forget who's stunting and end up in the same gap

Thanks, I need to pay more attention to the D-line. I've been so focused on of LBers and secondary I've not watched the line much.

I think that's one of the reasons there are so many running lanes that are taken advantage of against us

Our LBs aren't hitting their fits a lot. We slant a lot but the LBs aren't filling well. And we need to stop playing so many freaking LBs. Play only the group that played versus Florida and roll with it.

Any word on the status of Garrett?? I'm sure he will play but was wondering if Sumlin has said anything about his ankle injury.

I agree the LBs do get sucked up a lot but at the same time we only have one linebacker(probably better to say 1 1/2) that has any experience in first team live action. They will get better as the weeks go on just need experience. Unfortunately they ran out of time to get that experience.
