Recruiting Forum Talk XL

Lot of articles about Kiffin and Tennessee lately. One from John Jackson a USC broadcaster whose kid is being recruited by us. Jackson pretty much says we should hire Lane and the article is basically a complete rehab of his image that paints him a totally different light. Jackson basically says we need to get over the past and hire him.

Another article features Kiffin talking about the infamous press conference and trying to explain that all he wanted to do was explain to the press here, people that he'd come to know personally, why he was leaving even though he was advised not to by his agent. He said that he thought they deserved an explanation but it all went to hell when he asked that there'd be no cameras and one guy refused (WBIR IIRC).

What those articles tell me is Lane Kiffin is having his agent promote him for this job. Kinda funny that he's begging us to let him return. Whenever Lane grows up he'll be a good HC but I'm still not convinced he's grown up and the temptations that come with a job like UT aren't exactly good for a guy that hasn't grown up.

No thanks. Remember when they hit the bomb on the first play and he was making a big scene on the sidelines?

Besides his one redeeming quality divorced him.

I have a computer program that may allow me to record video and audio from my computer

If this works, my game experience will never be the same. I can sleep through the night, and watch football on Sunday afternoons, like most of you get to experience 😁

What do you make of the Gruden betting odds?

Notre Dame
Nebraska
UCLA
Texas

Probably more.

Nebraska last did that in the early 1960s.

Notre Dame has never had 5 losing seasons in 8 years.

I’m not sure UCLA is considered a historically elite program

I guess I needed to updated this. Texas is also staring down 5 losing seasons in eight years this season. I forgot how bad the Strong era was for them. So there is that!

I personally like the Gruden is working on Frost and will be an analyst going forward.

Certainly would be the best of both worlds, but I don’t see that happening. Who knows though...maybe Gruden is ready to settle down and not travel as much. Would be the perfect job for him...he can break down film constantly and groom Frost a little when needed. I’m sure we would be willing to compensate Gruden very well. We will see how everything plays out.

I would love for Gruden to be the next coach. I just have a hard time believing he wants the grind of recruiting.

I’m not sure it would be as hard for him as others. If he hires a good staff and just plays closer. He would have an awful lot to sell beyond the Tennessee football facilities.

I’m up from 5% to 20% personally. Still think it’s too good to be true but it is much much more compelling this time around.

Yeah, I suppose I was drawing similarities.

He should campaign for the job in Arkansas. They don't mind if they get a POS for a coach.

I’m in the minority, but given a choice, I’d take Frost over Gruden straight up

Some y’all gon have to deal with it

I might too. Gruden could be amazing, but also could see it not working out, or at least not being an automatic slam dunk (not necessarily the same, see Charlie Weiss, Lovie Smith, Harbaugh). Gruden does have a much more magnetic persona than any of those guys, but it just isn’t a guarantee.

I’m not saying Gruden wouldn’t be the answer — all I’m saying is I want substance over style (though, of course, both would be nice).

The one thing that makes Gruden really intriguing to me is the possibility that he could pull some recruiting coups based on name recognition, NFL pedigree/connections, etc. If you look at Alabama, Saban could be the worst X/O coach in the country (he’s not, I know) and still get to the playoff every year just because of that roster (see also Kirby Smart this year). I certainly don’t think Gruden would be a bad coach, so if he could pull top talent, we could be pretty good, and he maybe has a better chance of stepping in and doing that immediately than Frost et al.

But there’s a lot to like about Frost. And I still find it hard to believe Gruden comes here. Though that Hubbs quote...

Compare Harbaugh to Weiss and Smith?

Harbaugh was already successful in ciollege and is doing well at Michigan.

Also, Charlie Weiss wasn't a successful NFL HC.

I'm the biggest Gruden skeptic there is. For starters, I've never believed he was coming here, and don't believe it now (not even a little bit). Aside from that, I'm not at all convinced he would be a great college coach. So you may be in the minority Nick, but you're not alone.

Go Florida beat Georgia

I am not sure on this one. I almost want Georgia to sneak in the playoff and lose to Miami. I know it is highly unlikely that Miami or Georgia make the playoff, but Georgia losing to Richt would make the sickness I feel at Georgia making the playoff worthwhile.

Yeah it has been a really bad stretch for us. I looked at the other SEC powers too.

Bama hasn’t done this since the 1950s

Florida only has one losing season since 1979 (2013) and hasn’t done it since the 1940s.

Auburn since the late 1970s.

Georgia since the early 1960s.

LSU did it in the early 1990s (though it’s debatable that they are a historic power - they’ve had a lot of ugly years)

Anyway - losing these games matters even in a mediocre season. It becomes part of your identity. We identify our program by an eight or so year stretch in the late 1990s/early 2000s. We for some reason ignore the last 15+ years.

About as well as Brady Hoke did.

Please. You can't seriously believe they are in same league.

Hoke peaked in year 1 and hit a steep decline winning 8,7, and 5. That's not going to happen under Harbaugh.

But, but, 24-7 or whatever that silly number was that had no context.

You should be an apologist for the Vols like you are for the big 10. Can do no wrong in your eyes. :)
