Honestly Kiffin is interesting to think about to me. He would have won huge here in my opinion. He did us very wrong though.

I think in an alternate reality where he left Auburn or some place like that instead of us, he would be a realistic candidate in our minds.

It's frustrating because even if he was the right coach, we can't hire him. It's not feasible and would look so desperate on our end.

Can you imagine if we hired him and he struggled? Ugh. That would be a nightmare.

But also imagine if he walked in and explained himself and showed maturity and an understanding of this place that we didn't recognize before... What if he won us back over, snagged a top recruiting class and maybe beat Saban?? Water under the bridge overnight. Would he give us the best chance at that?

Or would we also be a program more famous for gas station robberies than football wins? It's not really been better in that regard under Butch, with the Crowder and AJ Johnson kinda stuff that's been lingering out there constantly over the last couple years. Drama. Maybe that's just college football everywhere.

Louisville managed to talk themselves into a move like this... Are we Louisville? I'd like to think we are more.

But bottom line for me. Win. Bring me somebody that does that. Kiffin is way down the list in my mind. But if all else fails I would rather go that route than hire an unknown that's set up for failure.

What part of his career as head coach can you point to and say that he is a candidate for a job like Tennessee?

Forget the part where he screwed us over for a second. And forget about his time as a coordinator. Even put aside the fact that he’s left 90% of his jobs with his employer hating his guts. Think about him as a head coach and his actual accomplishments.

Harbaugh is struggling in a solid conference in college.

In his first two seasons UM has won double digit games, they played in a NY6 bowl, and have had two consecutive top five recruiting classes. They only returned five starters from last years team. Most people expected them to go 9-3/8-4 this season.

We didn’t when kiffin was here either. We just make excuses for him cause he wasn’t here long enough for the hype to wear off. Had several pros on that team and he turned in a 7 win season. Gave away the UCLA game. Got embarrassed at Ole Miss. Didn’t even show up for our bow game.

People love to talk about what a great coach he is because he can scheme up a bomb for a TD. He fails at pretty much every other category in coaching. Ran off depth, brought the NCAA to town, had kids robbing people on the strip, driving his car into a ditch, etc. But hey, he can scheme up an easy touchdown about every three games for ya.

I get this. But you're also talking about year 1 after talent had fallen under Phil. He had more talent on the way. Crompton was awful and over the course of the year he transformed into a pretty good QB. He was one play away from beating Saban in year 1. He hammered Georgia and South Carolina.

I don't know. He could have failed here eventually. There's no way to know. But I also think his decision to leave here tarnished him everywhere.

I like that he feeds his playmakers and helps QB's. If you can recruit and do that, you can win a lot of games.

Buy I get it. I really do. I'm not gonna stand here and scream that he should be the hire.

With all the turmoil at ESPN and proposed layoffs wouldn’t the Gruden camp come out and squash any rumors if they weren’t true? Wouldn’t those rumors hurt his chances of keeping his job especially with him being the highest paid employee covering a brand that is declining?

Sorry, I didn't mean you. Other posters looking down their nose at folks who believe it's a serious possibility. Mostly Kingston :)

Buddy, I hope it happens just as much as the next guy. But I know a lot of big money boosters were fooled last time too.

The betting line stuff is interesting but the premise doesn't change. If somebody with a fat wallet thinks Gruden is coming and bets on it, that line is going to move substantially. We don't know if the guy with the fat wallet is being fooled. Just that he has money.

Why not take the “no excuses” stance with harbaugh?

The Big Slow should be a cake walk for a genius like harbaugh. Got blown out by PSU and hasn’t even played Ohio State.

I said something similar about Jimbo Fisher.
" but he lost his starting QB"
Yet we can lose 7 starters at one time and it's "no excuses". I'm not actually downing those coaches and definitely not supporting Jones, I just don't get the double standard.

Well his only great head college jobs were here and USC. I kinda don't think he got a fair shake at USC. They had insane recruiting restrictions and a postseason ban that you could say contributed to some of his struggles. He should have never taken that job. He would probably say that now.

He's a high profile coach, a great recruiter, the players that played here under him loved him. He plays a fun style of football and is willing to adapt to what the situation calls for.

And you can't just throw out his time as a coordinator. That's part of his accomplishments too. You gonna throw out all of Kirby Smarts accomplishments at Bama too? Football is football.

It's going down isn't it?

I don't put much stock in the betting line. One poster claims he made 10 $50 bets one right after the other and the line dropped 200 points. I don't think it's taking a lot of money to move the line.

The Kiffin talk is so embarrassing. Posters keep saying...yeah yeah yeah but he is a really good coach. No, he is not. He has a good offensive mind. Can scheme and put in a good game plan when he had talent to scheme around. Great. That is 1/100th of what he needs to be good at to be a great HEAD COACH. He has bad "makeup" to be a successful head coach. He has no redeeming CEO qualities. He has no desire to keep players disciplined on/off the field. He will not follow the rules recruiting because rules don't apply to somebody with a silver spoon in their mouth their entire career. Not to mention, their is a decent chance he gets himself into trouble off the field. Hard to get your players to act right off the field if you don't act right off the field. He has never been a good head coach.

They just ripped us apart on College Gameday.

"Choosing Kentucky by default"

"I'm done talking about Tennessee. All it is, is negative"

"What did I do to have to announce this game"

I knew it was bad between us Vol fans. I just didn't think our perception was that low nationally.

He's one of the top offensive minds in the game. Put up 800 yards of offense and 70 points last week. Yeah he's had a heck of a checkered past but I do think if given another chance at this level he would do well. I wouldn't hire him, but I will admit that he's a good coach. Very good recruiter as well and would bring a top staff with him at his next stop. He also has his team in position to win their conference in his first year.

Raiders: fired in September in year 2
UT: left us in mid January, gave us DD, brought NCAA to town who ended up destroying hoops program too.
USC: pulled off the team bus and fired in September
Bama: fired a few days before national title game

I was saying to ignore OC because that’s not what we are hiring him as. If he just had to call plays he’d be fine. He is a disaster as a head coach. I’m embarrassed for people who think he is special.

The dudes career transitions are all firings with the one exception of UT, where we’re still reeling from the effects.

He has won the ACC (which was complete trash aside from Virginia Tech until Clemson stepped up) only three times. With 5th year senior EJ Manual and then in 2013-14 under Winston. Jameis made that man a lot of money.

Aside from that, his defensive coordinator blows and he keeps that clown around.

Only 3 times? 3 conference titles in 8 years isn't bad, it's good. We going to discredit Saban for winning 3 consecutive conference titles in a down SEC? Jimbo is widely considered to be one of the top in game/X's and O's coaches in the game. He's also a great recruiter and his record speaks for itself. 80-22 as a head coach, 3 conference titles, 1 national title, and 2 playoff births. Yeah they're having a rough year, but name me 1 coach outside of Meyer and Saban (post Michigan State) who hasn't had a down year. Jimbo is one of the top coaches in the game and I don't think that's debatable.
