Recruiting the SEC to Orange

I wish finishing 5th overall in the SEC in recruiting translated into at least finishing 5th in overall standings, not 10th or 11th (or 13th) like we have the last two years.

We lost a lot of those recruits that had us ranked that high from 2007-09. That has really slowed our program down.

Excellent analysis. Since you are primarily using recruiting data from Rivals.com, have you considered breaking down availability of elite talent per state by position? The state of Tennessee produces limited numbers of SEC-caliber athletes but instate defensive line prospects, particularly defensive tackles, have always been exccedingly rare. I have witnessed us being "bridesmaids" for defensive tackle signees far too frequently for this reason.

I guess the best way of categorizing what I am referring to would be the position that most colleges project a given prospect to fill. We are all aware of high school quarterbacks/"athletes" who wind up as wide receivers or defensive backs, or safeties, who after bulking up, become linebackers.

I am particularly interested in what your data say about defensive tackle prospects. Recruiting defensive ends has not been as much of a problem for us, historically, as DTs, which requires a unique blend of size, strength, agility and mobility. Recruiting the latter skill set has always been difficult for us, especially compared to the success LSU, Auburn and Alabama have enjoyed over the years.

When Spurrier went to SC and Butch Davis went to NC, Thats when our recruiting took a big hit the players we were pulling out of those 2 states started going to those 2 schools, we were getting 4 or 5 top notch players each year from those 2 states, look back before them 2 coaches came and you will see.
