Rivals is releasing their list of post evaluation 5-star prospects for 2007 this week. They will put out 6-7 names a day in alphabetical order.

The first seven were named today.

1. Tray Allen OL committed to Teaxas
2. Marvin Austin DT offered by Tenn, ND, PSU, USC and others
3. Allen Bailey DE several high profile offers but not TN
4. Joseph Barksdale DT supposedly Tenn. is after him but I cannot confirm that he has an offer from us. Has been offered by LSU, ND, Mich, OhSt, Miami and others.
5. Arrelious Benn WR offered by many. I don't think UT is on the list
6. Eric Berry CB offered by Tenn., Miami, Texas, UF, UGA, USC and others
7. John Brantley QB committed to Texas

As I see it, UT is after Barksdale, Austin and Berry. Any chance in hades we get any of them? It seems to me that the contenders are locking up their classes for 2007 pretty early. IMO this will be the trend now. I like two of our early commitments and the other three, well I really don't know jack about them which may or may not mean anything. If we cannot sew up a top class early we are not going to have much left to choose from. A lot of you claim that CPF is an elite recruiter but so far I'm not seeing it this year. All of the guys who have commited to UT early are in-state and/or have family ties to the university. I have yet to see us going into someone else's backyard and pulling some guys out. I am also distressed that in a year with so many early commitments for a lot of schools that many of the guys who are supposed "locks" for UT are keeping mum. I don't think this is the end of the world but we definitely seem to be travelling a little futher down the slippery slope to the SEC cellar.

Last time I checked, the national champion Longhorns had a ridiculous number of early commits (nearly 20, I think). Almost every other major program had 4-8 early commits, including the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, USC, Notre Dame and Michigan. I don't think there is anything to worry about as far as where we stand in pre-season recruiting. If we have a good season on the football field, the recruits will be there as they always have been after good years for the Vols.

Eric Berry- We are the leader for him his dad was a captain at UT but it will be a fight w/ UGA till the end. The thing that confuses me somewhat about him is that everyone is saying he is the next Champ Bailey and we are recruiting him to play QB. Maybe when we get a QB we will just recruit him at CB but it seems strange to me.

Joseph Barksdale- His favorite player is Reggie White and has said it would be an honor to follow in his footsteps to UT but he has offers from literally every big time school in the country so who knows what will happen w/ him. If he was taking his 5 visits right now I think we would get one.

Marvin Austin- He came to the O&W game and he is good friends with Rico McCoy. Just like Barksdale he has offers from everyone but I would say right now we are in his top 10.

And Hillbilly relax and take a deep breath man it's not the end of the world. Right now the higher profile recruits are going to wait and see how we bounce back from the horrible season we had last year. And every single program in America starts w/ instate commits and then goes out of state. It's pretty simple if we have a good year (9-3 or better) then we will have a great recruiting class. If we suck again we won't.

May depend on what happens this season as far as recruits are concerned. Most kids today have that "what have you done lately gaze in their eyes". A good year will probably mean more big time recruits.

I was unaware that UT was recruiting Berry to play QB. I thought we were recuruiting him as an athlete. Judging by previous classes he will be turned into a cover corner ala J. Wade.

I think that it is way to early to begin judging the 07 class. The panic button should be reserved for next January or February, and also agree that a good season will definitely turn some heads, especially if the offense heats up under Cut.

You got that right.

I don't know if it is the constant flow of info on these recruits (news now comes 12 months a year), but it seems to me that the UT staff has a sense of urgency that hasn't been present for a while. That combined with all of the local talent should lead to another top ten class.

today's 5-star prospect names:

1. John Chiles ATH comitted to Texas
2. Jimmy Clausen QB committed to ND
3. Torrey Davis DT lots of offers, supposedly between UF and FlSt
4. Noel Devine RB lots of high profile offers
5. Chris Galippo OLB committed to USC
6. Gary Gray CB committed to SC
7. Everson Griffen DE lots of offers, supposedly between USC and UCLA

Combining yesterday's and today's numbers 6 out of 14 Rivals 5-star prospects are already committed. That's almost half. Remember the old saying, 'beggaras can't be choosers'? Well these guys are definitely not beggars. You would expect these to be the guys who sit back and take a long look at things while they sit on a pile of schoalrship offers. Obviously, that is not happening.

Joe Chaisson will probably be a 3-4 star QB. His myspace page had a a&m theme until he recently visited Knoxville. Now, it's a UT theme. We're his #1 right now.

I'm focusing on the Rivals 5-stars becasue that is the new news this week I guess. I read several draft analyses that opined Nick Stephens was the best player we got the 2006 class. It'll be interesting to see if he develops into a starter.

If Stephens redshirts this year, that will be 2 straight years he hasnt played at all.

more 5-star prospects announced today:

1. Ronald Johnson CB offered by UT, Mich, ND, USC and others
2. Dwight Jones WR UNC commit
3. Caleb King RB lots of offers
5. Willy Korn QB Clemson commit
5. Ryan Mallett QB Mich commit
6. Joe McKnight ATH offered by UT supposedly between LSU & USC
7. Ryan Miller OT lots of offers supposedly between Colorado & ND

In review, 9 of the 21 5 star prospects released thus far are early commits. Any chance we get Ronald Johnson? What about our chances of moving up on McKnight's list?

I'm hoping Sawtelle will be one of the final 6 Rivals 5 star prospects whose names are released tomorrow. :cross:

Recruiting is such an inexact science. One year we were 18th; when those guys were seniors we won the narional title. Then one year we were 2nd with Rashad Baker etc. then four years later we were not even close to 2nd in talent.

Well, the Rivals Top 250 came out today. Five Tennesseans made it, all as four star prospects. Let's ponder our chances with each of them:

1. Chris Donald, the only Tennessean in the Top 100, people keep saying he's all Vol. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
2. Golden Tate does not even have UT on his list now.
3. Harrison Smith all indications suggest he is headed to Notre Dame.
4. Rae Sykes. Some say he'll be this year's B. Warren. Is it true?
5. Chris Walker does not have UT on his list.

So we could get somewhere between zero and 60 percent of the top in-state players this year.

Well I'm sure your right because kids never change their minds.

Right now we are the leaders for Smith and Donald. Things change but if signing day we're today they would both be vols. We are in the top 2-3 of Rae Sykes and will probably come down to us or LSU but it won't matter anyway because he won't be qualified. Chris Walker there is no chance for whatever reason he is not even considering us and my guess would be Miami or :gun: Alabama. Golden Tate will be a domer as soon as ND offers which I hear will be soon. So most likely we sign 2 of the top 5 maybe 3. But the biggest one is not missing out on the state's top prospect 3 years in a row.

Gee, is that a 5 spot I see for Ole Miss? Coach O just keeps hauling talent onto the campus in Oxford.

Some of rivals info is not accurate. If you want to check the MOST RECENT story Golden Tate he says he Top 5 are Florida, Vanderbilt, UTK, Notre Dame, and Alabama. He had alot of good things to say about UTK and said they would definately be in the mix at the end. But, that doesnt mean we will get him. But we are nowhere near being "out of it" in the Tate race. And, P.S. Notre Dame has already offered both Smith and Tate.

I'll be shocked if we get either one of them. Not trying to be negative. I just hear ND will get them both.
