Right now we are the leaders for Smith and Donald. Things change but if signing day we're today they would both be vols. We are in the top 2-3 of Rae Sykes and will probably come down to us or LSU but it won't matter anyway because he won't be qualified. Chris Walker there is no chance for whatever reason he is not even considering us and my guess would be Miami or :gun: Alabama. Golden Tate will be a domer as soon as ND offers which I hear will be soon. So most likely we sign 2 of the top 5 maybe 3. But the biggest one is not missing out on the state's top prospect 3 years in a row.

Some of these fabulous recruits in the mythical top 100 will have to choose schools that offer majors in "mustard seed counting", "horseback riding" and "badmitton". Some of these sleak-headed cats got their "Cs" in high school for attendance, "brushing their teeth at least weekly" and "neat clothing". Some will not be prepared for our school or most of the others.

I'll be shocked if we get either one of them. Not trying to be negative. I just hear ND will get them both.

You hear? What he heck does that mean? Where do you hear? Because everything I have read points to Smith leaning heavily towards UTK. Many people have made assumptions based on the fact that he plays for a Catholic high school and therefore must be a lean to ND. But, the bottom line is that is just not true. For Smith those people are just pulling stuff straight out of nowhere. Tate on the other hand has made some very favorable remarks about his strong interest in ND. However, he has never said anything to indicate he is 'leaning heavily' to committing to ND. He actually indicated he was very intersted in playing for an in-state school (the reason for the presence of Vanderbilt, I mean come on Vanderbilt on his list). I think Tate is one that will be up in the air very much until the day he commits. I think we will end up doing quite well on in-state guys. These are my opinions, just opinons:

Smith - UTK (think he is heavy lean)
Donald - UTK (think he is heavy lean)
<strike>Tate - ND</strike>
Sykes - UTK (have a feeling he wants to stay close to home and play with Dustin)
<strike>Walker - LSU</strike>
Hawkins - UTK (once he gets offer he will commit)
Campbell - UTK (verbal already)
Anderson - UTK (verbal already)
Maples - UTK (verbal already)
Cooper - UTK (verbal already)

Those are the best players in Tennessee, and I think that would be considered successful.

I read that Jimmy Clausen's teammate, 5 star RB Marc Tyler, committed to USC. Isn't that the kid that we were supposed to hafe a shot at? I seem to recall daddy Clausen stating that he encouraged Tyler to come to UT.

He (Tyler) really like UTK. But he said after he returned from vistis to both ND and UTK he knew he would not be able to go so far away from home. That is the reason for the early commitment. He knew he didnt want to go that far away and out of the schools in his area he knew he liked USC the most. As far as RB goes for this class I think we have a very good shot at Lennon Creer from Texas. He is a stud and in the inexact world of recruiting he would be as good a RB recruit as any in the county. We should have no complaints if we were to actually land him. He loves Trooper and likes the tradition of UTK.

Gee, is that a 5 spot I see for Ole Miss? Coach O just keeps hauling talent onto the campus in Oxford.

and your point?? doesn't matter what he gets, it matters how he uses it. Coach O isn't all that and a bag of chips and recruits will find that out soon enough.

and btw, don't count them as solid recruits yet, as we found out this year, wait untill they sign untill you go praise the man.

so what do you think our realistic chance is with Lennon Creer?

Realistic, and at this point that is very favorable. Texas is basically out of the picture for him and that is the biggest reason to be optimistic.

I'd be surprised if we land this kid from Texas.

Have you kept up with his recruitment? Texas is out of the picture, and none of the other Texas colleges are powerhouses that we cant overcome.

Just read the article where we lost Alex Watkins to Bama.

http://www.jacksonsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar.../606180329/1006

Sure stings a little but on the bright side we did get the two commits from NC over the weekend. I sure wish I could figure out why UT has such a problem getting kids from west Tennessee. Memphis is usually the most talent-rich area in the state. What's the problem?

I've always thought a lot of it had to do with geography. Memphis is in the state of Tennessee, but it's so far away that there isn't much of a home state advantage.

Yeah. I hear you, but then think about the state of Texas. It is much bigger geographically than the state of Tennessee but they always do well statewide. I know there is a strange Memphis vs. Nashville rivalry but I just never figured out how that transfers to Knoxville.

i posted this in another thread a while back, but my theory on why Memphis (being from the area, i think this is fairly accurate) is that the geography of it as GAVol points out, is the biggest thing. Memphis is closer to Bama, Ole Miss, MSU, ARK than it is to UTK. Plus, you have Memphis there, Southern Miss is in the mix as well. There are a lot of choices....and a lot of different influences. memphis is 6+ hours from Knoxville depending on what area you are from. there is a huge difference in the culture from the Memphis area and East TN. It's like two different states imo. Given that distance, neither area really identifies with each other very well at all. Memphis identifies better with the Delta Areas of ARK and MISS than it does with the rest of the state.

Whereas in TX, while it is a much, much bigger state, there aren't but two big schools in the state...A&M and TX...and TX has a lot more talent than TN. so TX always gets its share of in state top notch talent, and the rest are available to go to OK, A&M, TCU, TX Tech etc.. etc....

Yeah, Texas definitely produces in huge numbers. Think about all the D1A schools there and how most of them are usually stacked with in-state players on their rosters. Just for comparison:

Tennessee has 47 Tennesseeans on the 2006 roster;
Vandy has 12 Tennesseeans on the 2006 roster;
Memphis has 50 Tennesseeans on the 2006 roster; and
MTSU had 36 Tennesseeans on the 2005 roster (2006 does not seem to be available yet).

Now, without even considering how many Texans play out-of-state:

Texas has 107 Texans on the 2006 roster;
Texas A&M has 104 Texans on the 2006 roster;
Texas Tech has 104 Texans on the 2006 roster;
Baylor had 107 Texans on the 2005 roster (can't access 2006 roster);
Houston had 106 Texans on the 2005 roster (can't access 2006);
Rice has 57 Texans on the 2006 roster;
SMU has 86 Texans on the 2006 roster;
UTEP has 49 Texans on the 2006 roster;
TCU had 99 Texans on the 2005 roster (can't access 2006); and
North Texas ha 79 Texans on the 2005 roster (can't get 2006).

Of course some of these #s are based on spring rosters and include guys who will never be on a gameday roster but the #s are amazing. Now lets apply a little math to try and get a real comparison.

Population of TN=5,962,959 est. for 2005
# of D1A Tennesseans who play in state=145
Average # of Tennesseans per in-state D1A player=41,124

Population of TX=22,859,968 est. for 2005
# of D1A Texans who play in state=898
Average # of Texans per in-state D1A player=25,457

Now this is nowhere near exact science since you have to factor in discepancies in average age of state residents, among other things, if you want these numbers to really mean something. It's still fun to tinker with.

Just noticed that we lost Anthony Gildon, an unrated DB from Cali., to Oregon. I am starting to agree with a prior post (maybe in another thread) that opined we are wasting too much time and $$ letting Phil and the gang jet out to the west coast. There is no way in hades we land anyone worth a flip from out there with the way our recruiting is going right now. Hamilton needs to put a stop to this ASAP. We lost the Jimmy Clausen sweepstakes and we're not getting any of his pals as consolation prizes so let's try planting our seeds in some fertile soil.

That was before we went 5-6. I'm talking about using our resources where they may make a difference NOW, not where we got some good gets 4-5 years in the past. I just don't think we are "elite" enough at this particular point in time to attract the attention of big time, west coast recruits who stand a good chance of actually enrolling in school. It seems like we'd be better served concentrating on the East, SE and mid-West.

I agree we should focus more on the south, but you can't just ignore the west coast. USC has won non-stop the past 4 years because of the players from cali. You pull one or two of them and who knows.....

that being said, UT recruits miami and south florida very well.
