Reid Suggests Romney Paid No Taxes for 10 Years

That's an absolutely moronic statement by you. He already admitted to making $40 million-plus in the last two years. Its not about sheer size of income -- cat's already out of the bag.

It is about not paying a rate that most Americans would consider reasonable. Its about the Obama campaign being able to make Romney emblematic of the imbalance in tax treatment for the wealthiest compared to middle class voters.

Considering 50% of the American public don't pay income taxes....

Let me ask you fellows a simple question: In the past ten years, has Romney ever paid zero income tax?

've been giving this some thought. Who is likely Reid's leak on Romney's tax returns?

I think it has to be coming from one of two sources: 1) someone within the IRS has leaked it. That would be very bad for that person as I imagine that is a felony; 2) someone from within Romney's own camp let it slip somewhere that this is the reason he is not releasing returns and the comment has made its way to Reid. That could be a set up, but I doubt it as I would think if it were Romney would have sprung the trap by now.

Will be interesting to see whether someone comes forward and admits to being the source.

I have no doubt MR used every legal means to pay the least amount of taxes possible, don't care, great for him.

There is also no doubt in my mind someone from the BO campaign has had access and pored over Romney's returns. They found nothing they could use other than he has a good accountant!

Most likely scenario: The source is Harry Reid's imagination.

Seems like a strange thing to just make up. I mean, someone like Arpaio on the Obama birth certificate, there are no repercussions to him. But Reid says I'm told he paid zero and Romney proves that wrong, Reid is crushed and Obama take a pretty serious hit, too, just by connection.

The longer this drags on like this, the more likely it seems it is that Romney paid zero, or effectively zero, in the subject time period.

He might have done it legally, but I think that the voters would be pretty unhappy with a guy making tens of millions of dollars in a given year and avoiding any income tax for that year.

It would probably cost him any chance he has at winning the election. It appears that this is why he is not releasing them.

yep. Looks like you've thought of every angle. Can't get one by you.

So using your same logic, why doesn't Harry produce the source, plaster him across all media organizations with the facts, and prove MR has not paid taxes? It would seem this would seal the election for O if they would only do this one simple thing.

Make sense to you why they would not do this?

Reid indicated it came from someone with or formerly at Bain so it's not #1.

There are plenty of Bain people in Team Obama so that's the most likely source.

Reid isn't going to get crushed. He's made all kinds of crazy statements in the past and has never faced any repercussions. The only way that Romney can prove Reid wrong is to release the returns, and that is exactly what Reid wants.

And what's the worst that could happen to Reid? He's not going to be sued. He faces a credibility hit, but he has very little credibility to begin with, and has never shown any concern over it.

Wow.

I am shocked that as a lawyer you would accept the "guilty until proven innocent" direction of this discussion.

The reason he hasn't released them is . . . You.

People such as yourself are concocting off the wall scenarios without having a clue what the returns look like. Can you imagine what the same people will twist if they have actual numbers to cook?

seriously? Have you not seen his joe sixpack approach to decision making or his base assumption that everyone white is a racist but no one else is?

and he's already said he doesn't know if it's true right after he says it's true. he says things like "the word is out that Romney paid no taxes" to shift it onto 3rd parties when he's made the claim himself then backtracks and says it's what he's heard.

The word is out.....

83% believe Harry Reid is lying about someone telling him Romney has paid no taxes for 10 years

6 % believe Harry Reid is telling the truth

11% have never heard of Harry Reid.

That makes no sense. He's already armed "people like me" with the fact that he has off shore tax haven accounts and makes more money in a year than the vast majority do in a lifetime. If his motivation was to prevent the argument at all, he'd have released nothing.

It has to be deeper than that. so much deeper that he is willing to risk losing the election over it, give Obama a basis for relentless attacks, and withstand the pressure of members of his own party to release more.

I am really unable to come up with any explanation other than that he paid such a low rate in one, or multiple years, that he has made the calculation that it the repercussions of disclosure are so bad that they outweigh all of this.
