Religious debate (split from main board)

I'm not insulted. Frequently when people disagree with me, they try to make some claim that I don't have the spirituality to grasp the Word. I think that's a cop-out.

That's your choice to think it's a cop-out.

And I have read where the Bible speakd of this matter and I choose to believe what is says.

1 Corinthians 2:14
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Romans 8:9
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

I guess you guys have it all figured out. It is a shame that everyone who lived from 350 AD until the Protestant reformation went
to hell.

It remains a mystery. You must have faith. If we all had it figured out, no one in this world would have doubt.

You choose not to believe and that is your choice.

We choose to believe.

As I have said before, I choose not to attend church, knowing that is not a qualification to enter Heaven.

As a younger man,I was put off by religion because of my dislike for church. I saw those who ridiculed others for not attending church, claiming damnation, only to see them do worse and claim salvation because they attended church.

I soon found out that is why the Bible speaks of a personal relationship with God. You can have that, without church.

I agree with you somewhat on this, but the Bible also says not to forsake the gathering as well. Eventually, you have to quit worrying about what everyone else does in the church and focus on what you need and what you need to do to be a good disciple of the Word. There are also plenty of churches to attend, so throwing a blanket over all churches because of what happened at one is not something that is good to do. I did the same thing, but after a few years realized that it was the wrong thing to do.

Being convinced in your own mind is what being a Christian means. If you never convince yourself of anything in life, what does life really mean?? I'm not directing that at you, it's just a generalization.

You are true. I am more set in my ways now than anything. My wife and kids attend church. However, I will not force them to believe. I think that causes more to turn away. Most people will find God on their own, given the chance. He speaks to us all. We just have to listen

If I understand things correctly, there are more people going to hell today than ever before. Now that's a real shame.

Lets see! I your mind you say there is no god, so do you have it all figured out also??

What good is it to not fully believe something?

One of the things that I stress to my congregation is to know what Church is for. Its not about committees, who's wearing what, who gets to do this and that. None of that stuff matters. If you think thats what it takes, then your living off works. That they need to come to church for one purpose and one purpose only, to worship GOD. If they come for any other purpose, then stay at home! They are wasting their time.

No, this is a fair point. I need to remember that we are all reasonably sure of ourselves.

I don't have it figured out, I just don't think all the spirituality stuff makes sense. As far as what good that is, what good is it to believe so something that all you faculties tell you is untrue?

Being "catholic", "baptist", church of christ", "methodist",... has nothing to do with it. That is just a name.

My grandaddy was catholic from his youth til he died. Later in life he disagreed with some of the things taught in the catholic church, even going back to school. But he still considered himself catholic.

Because Catholics and Eastern Orthodox were all there really were as far as Christians, and some are saying they aren't really Christians at all. So for that stretch of time, people were "doing it wrong."

Look, by everything that is in the Bible, if you take what all the Catholics do, as a whole, they don't do a very good job getting to the basics of the Bible. They are a VERY convoluted religion that ties itself to some Christian roots. They have implemented MANY pagan rituals into their services, and that's because as the Romans conquered people way back when, they added certain parts of certain rituals to keep from having issues with them in the future, for the most part. The only way to the Father, is through the son. Not through the Pope, the clergy, the bishops, Mary, Peter, or a father, but through Jesus Christ. Catholics will never admit they replace Jesus, in certain areas with other things or people, but they do. I had a friend growing up whose family was Catholic, and I went to several services with him as a child, and they are NOTHING like the Bible says a service should be. This is something that I have been shown as a faithful man, and discernment is something that God has given me as a Christian, to cut through all the stuff that doesn't matter, and the Catholics have more than any other "Christian" based denomination I have ever seen.

Got to thinking about this at church yesterday....... Judas..........a horrific traitor or a vastly misunderstood devoted follower of Christ?

Question: What would you do if the son of God told you you're gonna betray him?

I read an article some time back asking this very question. Very interesting. I will try and dig it up.

1.) Judas was an extremist. He believed he was forcing Jesus' hand to attack the Roman gov't.

2.) History/tradition tells us that he hung himself in burial plot of the high priest who wanted Jesus killed.

I have also heard it theorized that Judas was asked to fulfill the the prophecy because he was the only one that Jesus could trust to actually follow through with. Imagine knowing how the other followers and history would treat you if confronted with the this task, how many would actually follow through with it?

It's a very interesting topic to say the least.

Wow... Where did that come from ?

At that time shouldn't the high priest be buried in a sepulchre ?
