Report: Oklahoma dismisses starting QB BomarAssociated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar will not play for the Sooners this season following an investigation by the team, according to a television report.

Rhett Bomar threw for 1,018 yards and 10 TDs as a freshman in 2005.
Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."

Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed.

"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.

"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.

A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.

He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

"I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement.

Why would we go after him? I'd say Oregon could be a team to watch for since they seem to be interested in quite a few players that have left/been kick off of their former team. There is speculation that another player might go as well. I've heard a special teamer and I've heard Peterson.

Staring OL J.D. Quinn is the other player.

That'll raise some eyebrows. These guys may have completely blown their eligibility depending on who paid them and what they were paid to do, if anything.

Bomar has been a complete screwup since he arrived in Norman. My guess is that Stoops grew weary of waiting for him to grow up.

So, Paul Thompson is the starting QB for 2006??? What was the over/under on OU's wins this year again? I think I would take the under.

I think this makes them an 8-9 win team. Thompson had moved to receiver. They have a JC QB and an incoming freshman they like. However, I would expect Thompson to return to QB.

I would peg them at 7. I do not see Thompson, nor a freshman, beating Washington early, winning at Autzen, beating Texas, A&M, or Tech. That still leaves a couple tough road games at Mizzou and Ok. State.

Washington, Mizzou and OSU are not very good. 9-3 still looks good to me.

Washington is terrible. OU would beat them with Bo Hardegree under center. Missouri and OK State aren't any good, either. A&M is mediocre and Tech hasn't come close to beating Stoops in Norman. The chief beneficiary of this is Oregon. They can realistically think about making a BCS game now. It also puts Texas, if they can defend their home field against the Buckeyes, in a great position to defend their title.

Very noble . . . and also very easy to say when you are trying to put as much distance between a player and a program as possible.

True, but it expresses the mentality you have to have to be a great program.

When it rains it pours. Toy guns, drinking, money for nothing, shootings, drugs, and so on. What is going on?

Are you freaking serious? Washington is absolutely awful, and even if this game were on the road for the Sooners, they'd win by 20+.

With Bomar and the starting OL, they were going to outclass Oregon up there, and now it's a toss-up. Texas has to be a loss, I agree. A&M absolutely STUNK last year. Tech will be another Toss up.

OKLAHOME STATE SUCKS TOO!

Mizzou is okay.

I'm just kind of shocked about your mentions of Washington, OKST, and A&M. Did you think this was 2002?or 2000?
