rev Lowery's benediction

I'd prefer not to pay for it all. If someone wants to be educated or wants their children to be then they should take full responsibility for the education.

well lets take the case of the impoverished student. their parents can't pay for their education fully. so are we to condemn them to not having a chance to be successful? to me that sounds more like an aristocratic system to where no one but the wealthy have the right an education

I suppose that can be true sometimes. All the home school kids I knew were just strange and completely socially inept. The ones I knew came to take art and a couple of other subjects with the public school kids.

Never knew any home schoolers when I was in school. The ones I have met since can manage to use "sir, mam, please, thank you" and make eye contact. So they easily move up on my list compared to many of the public schoolers I meet. Public school can be fine but too many parents use it as a crutch.

The impoversished student and his family need to get involved in a church or some other local community organization that will further their education, if that is what they desire. Instead we just drop these kids off at a brick building everyday, pretend some educating is happening, and continue to render the family and the network surrounding the family to be more meaningless.

I agree to that as well. there are several cases I deal with daily where the "parent" uses school as a daycare and expects us to raise their kid

get a scholarship. I would guess they are available at almost every private school

didn't the preacher also pray that "the red should get ahead" i thought that was sexist, obvious toward the indian men only.

once again where does the money come for EVERY impoverished student?

you don't do it for every one since all are different. Do you force calculus on every student no matter what? Not all benefit from it like they would alternative ed. which is better than leaving not very smart kids in the hands of most of our public school teachers (many of them no smarter than the kids they teach)

While it may be nice to think that EVERY person should be afforded EQUAL situations, it's just not feasible.

Government would have to restrict freedoms via excessive taxation to accomplish this. In the end, all would lose their choice and society as a whole would be worse off.

While I'm not advocating a complete lack of a safety net the notion of a complete safety net is flawed.

well what do you mean by alternative education? and at what level are you refering. all students should go through elementary education however I think when they get to a certain level they should go either towards a college prep type school or vocational school. also, are you saying that all ps teachers are bad? if so that is stupid stereotype

what safety net? welfare? if so I agree. however every kid deserves an education and a shot at making something of themselves. that is kind of a cornerstone of our nation.

I do mean voc school for those who have no desire for higher education. And I know enough teachers to know there aren't that many good ones left in public schools.

they've talked about opening voc schools back up in chattanooga, because of the lack of skilled laborers.

yah that would make a ton of sense with vw coming. hamilton county sb making a smart decision? wow stop the press haha. actually they have done some good. look at battle academy and their implementation of rti and their reduction in the number of special ed students in that school. I think with rti and differentiated instruction we can finally head in the right direction.

This is ridiculous. If any white preacher were to say "get off welfare velcro hair" it'd be an international incident. This is what is going to drive the wedge deeper in race relations.

yup. after all that talk about progress this one jackass makes a stupid comment and it sturs things up. it just shows that people have a hidden agenda. how could anyone think that wouldn't cause an issue. did anyone read his speech prior?

Beyond that, Obama had to know his views or at least the reputation prior to his selection. Obama is absolutely complicit in this.
