Reviving Redistributionism

which ones are those?

There is no such thing as giving someone a future. You might not have intended that as you said it, but the prevailing liberal sentiment is that giving away money and providing programs does just that. It isn't true. Generally, what it gives is a sense of entitlement and ensures future generations of recipients.

Some people are born with nothing. In fact, they're born with a negative sum. Their Dad was out of the picture before they became fetuses. Their mom is either "working" or getting high. Their "friends" are trying to get them to push drugs. Some weeks the only place they get a square meal is at school. They don't get proper medical or dental care. So, I guess public education, for one, and any after-school programs or mentorship programs that benefit from public funding would be examples of "social programs." As would job training and employment assistance.

This type of assistance might be the only glimmer for a lot of people - they actually can influence them to choose a positive path in life and help them become independent, contributing members of society. Perhaps this is what I intended.

Well, it's the role of the government to capture and punish criminals, right?

So doesn't it make sense for the government to play a role in trying to prevent people from becoming criminals?

Don't remember that one in the constitution........

Why does it always have to be government this and that?

Let me re-phrase.

In theory...

How do you feel about your tax dollars going toward capturing and punishing criminals (and paying your salary)?

How would you feel about your tax dollars going toward reducing crime so that we don't have to a) suffer the consequences of the crime and b) pay as much for capturing and punishing those who commit crimes?

You really think the government help keep crime low and keep kids out of trouble? Where do the parents fit in?

1.) It is pretty clear about National Defence and Law Enforcement.

2.) It doesn't work....... that is a pipe dream because a lot of people refuse to believe that some people do not want help and are down right evil.

*It is actually something I push hard for working with the youth especially in liberal bastions ie Cincy, C-bus and Cleveland. I fight constantly that this is something you can't measure until those kids are older.

Why is "the government" this evil thing in the minds of so many?

The "government" is made up of people -- law-abiding citizens, most of whom probably devote their life not toward making a lot of money but toward public service (and yes, reliable employment).

We laud military leaders and members (as we should) for doing a good job, yet we seem to scorn anyone else whose paycheck comes from our tax dollars. There's no reason why other public professionals can't do a good job at helping people, and therefore preventing crime. I'm not saying all social programs are perfect, but I believe they can work.

In regards to the role of parents, of course we all want parents to assume their roles, and parents should rightly have a lot of responsibility. It's a vicious cycle, though - like a virus. Some parents aren't fit to be parents, and then guess what happens to their kids? You have to step in and stop it from spreading.

Why does the goverment have to play such a large role in day to day living? That is not the role of goverment... never has been, nor should it ever be.

That is the biggest bunch of bs I have ever heard in my life!!!

As Jeffrey Pelt would say.....

"Listen, I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies I'm stealing their lollipops. But it also means I keep my options open. "

Politician = scum of earth ameba shite.

As do I. My wife and I are big brothers/big sisters for a 9- and 10-yr-old here, and if you got to know them and thought about their trajectory without any outside influence, your best guess is that they're going to become criminals at worst or dead-beat dads at best. I mean, we're talking basics here, like eating vegetables, brushing their teeth, doing their homework, reading, writing, arithmetic -- it's too easy for the system to let them just slip through, graduate from High School, and have no clue how to make a life for themselves.

Your post makes no sense in relation to mine.

Most government employees are not elected politicians.

They're average people.

Drill personal responsibility and self confidence into them.

The kids are born without a fighting chance.

A couple comments on this topic.

1. I'm all for helping people but I believe that even good intentions of government handouts/entitlements can have the negative outcome of creating dependence. It's ironic since some of these programs are supposed to encourage independence.

2. I'm uneasy with the notion that "we" can always ask someone better off than us (the rich) to pay more. I've never seen anyone who supports this clearly answer the question of when enough is enough (the rich are paying enough).

3. Entitlements have such inertia that they creep like kudzu. They are blunt tools that become part of the culture whether they are effective or not and they are impervious to removal.
