I've heard from folks who stuck through the season that it did indeed get better.
Not hard to do though, as it was a s**t pile for the first 4 weeks I endured. I can ignore a lot of stupid plot and backstory stuff, but the acting was worse than junior high theatre.
Started watching this on Netflix. I'm on episode 5; holy crap this is a cheesefest. The premise is good enough but good lord the acting and dialogue are horrid. Some of the main cast are ok, but most of the minor cast are terrible and they have some SyFy movie level bad extras.
And it's been mentioned but these guys all look pretty good for people living in an apocalypse. They could try just a little harder to make them look not so "pretty".
I also don't think the characters can be one dimensional or cliche enough. The main good guy is the "tortured, hesitant anti-hero" who always has a witty remark and a cool pose after he cuts someone up; and they might as well give the main bad guy a Dr. Evil laugh.
Ok, I'm on about episode 12 now, and a couple of things:
1) Whoever was saying the show/acting gets better, you have a very strange definition of "better". The acting and story is just as bad as it's ever been.
2) NBC must really be hurting for this to get renewed. The ratings were actually not all that great. The pilot got about an 11.6, but by the end of the season the ratings were down to a 6.0. That would have gotten it cancelled on any other network.

I wouldn't call this a great show by any means. If it got cancelled a month into the season we'd all probably not be too upset about it. It's decent enough to watch each week and I do watch it, it just has some really corny story lines and acting at times. Tossing the antagonist (the black guy) back and forth between good and evil sides is ridiculous and should have never happened. That alone made the writers look not all that brilliant.
I don't think it makes the writers look bad in any way. It just shows that he's for whoever is going to win the war, or where he can get the most power. Not much else.
Plus, its an excuse to see Gus not dead.
