Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Until Barnes starts playing more guys than his typical 7 then we will always struggle at the end of the year. It really bit us today where we needed 2 guys who got very, very few minutes during the year to come in and perform at a championship type level. Rarely does that work. Plavsic averaged 4 minutes and Gaines 3 per game this year and those 2 were asked to make major contributions today.
I’m not saying I disagree with you that the backups need more minutes in the regular season, but don’t think this game was a good example of that. Both players have solid minutes and had the best (Uros) and third best +\-s on the team

Tennessee's issues have been the lack of a deep threat. We don't have that Chris Lofton like 3 point shooter that pushes team defenses out to the three-point line. We need to recruit that type player.

It also wouldn't hurt to have a big, beefy center as well. Something we haven't had since Wayne Chism.

I think it is a great example of it. We just asked a guy who has averaged 3 minutes a game to come in and make 2 huge FTs. +/- has nothing to do with that.

+\- can help measure their overall impact. Neither had a negative one. And we asked him to come play D, bad luck resulted in him needing to shoot free throws

No, we asked him to come in and play ball. Stats can be very misleading. I've seen too many guys go 1-10 and then hit the game winner.

Why, because we’ll never have another coach with such a great track record in March?

So we want to get rid of a coach that has us in Tournament competing for Sweet 16s every year for...

Sounds a lot like the issues we are running into in Football. We could go from what we have now to being like Vandy or A&M. Both A&M and Vandy canned good coaches (Kennedy for A&M and Stallings for Vandy) and now they are irrelevant. We canned Fulmer in football and have sucked ass ever since.

I’ve never said we should get rid of Barnes. It’s funny how people read into my comments and think that. I just think we should have higher expectations for a team with 3 , maybe 4 future NBA players that was the unanimous pick to win the SEC and is 18-8.

You’ll be much more appreciative of Barnes when he’s gone. I can promise you that. I can promise all the idiot Barnes haters that.
I appreciate Barnes, just like I appreciated Don DeVoe. He’s a good coach that might win a SEC championship once in a while and might get to the second weekend of the NCAA tourney every once in a while

That is the problem. I watch them out there and they are good but I don't see future NBA players. They don't take over the game like some of the superstars that I have seen in the past. I will say that Keon Johnson impressed me today but the others just don't look like NBA talent. When I think of NBA talent, I think of players like Carmelo Anthony or Kevin Durant who took over games in college to help get their teams to FF and win at the highest level. We don't have that.

Elite teams only play 7-8 guys. Coach K has done it for years and so does Calipari. You aren’t signing 13 four/five stars, and your five stars play 30+ minutes per game. Plavsic and Gaines both did their jobs.

Not every NBA player is Anthony or Durant. You’ll see both those guys in the league for many years
