Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

The thing I wonder most about with Coach Barnes and the staff is - if Tennessee can't win the big ones with two NBA lottery picks and some other really talented players on its roster ... well, how often will Tennessee have a better chance than it did this season?

Barnes is the coach, I think he's made Tennessee a credible name, so it's not anything about making a change. I'm not about that. I just wonder what it will take roster-wise to break through - or if Tenneseee ever will.

It’s not going to happen with Barnes. He’s won one conference tourney and one Final Four in 30 years of coaching. He’s a solid coach. He just isn’t gonna take you to the top

Maybe this feels like a lame answer, but honestly, luck. So much of it is just luck after you make it in the tourney(s)

Common sense is part of economics. Supply/demand type thing. Go study some more.
Oh so because UCLA wanted CRB so badly, we thought we had to pay him $5M to keep him? I get it and at the time was glad we did that. However, it’s time for him to put up or shut up for that kind of money

He will have to get off his azz and recruit a little better. Too many wasted scholarships on this team and lack of a pg and post player will keep this years team from being a Final 4 team. Great coaches build a roster instead of just recruiting a bunch of players and hoping they pan out

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. The “ best” coaches don’t depend on “ luck” to win games in the tourney
Eh, they sorta do. Everybody was convinced Tony Bennent was a terrible tourney coach. Then he won the NC, benefitting from some real friendly calls going his way and alot of close games. Every team that wins the national championship in CBB has good luck, just a fact. Now obviously there are better coaches than Barnes out there who have been better positioned to take advantage of the luck more often, but if youre good enough to get a top 3 seed, you are in position to win the NC with some luck. He hasn't had it in excess

You are learning a bit. What was the alternative? Wes Miller at 1.8, and 6 years of mediocrity. Lol.

Yep. 100%. And we just saw an exhibit of why this afternoon. In game coaching in tight games leaves a lot to be desired. Headscratching substitutions, and cannot for the life of us find ways to avoid 5+ minute scoring droughts.

If it doesn’t happen with Barnes, it’ll never happen for UT

Until Barnes starts playing more guys than his typical 7 then we will always struggle at the end of the year. It really bit us today where we needed 2 guys who got very, very few minutes during the year to come in and perform at a championship type level. Rarely does that work. Plavsic averaged 4 minutes and Gaines 3 per game this year and those 2 were asked to make major contributions today.
