I find it equally astounding the mental gymnastics someone will go through to defend him even though my original statement was merely that losing in the second round with that loaded roster and Durant was Barnes worst year as a head coach. This year if we lose in the second round, it will be a bad job by him too but I'd still rate the year with Durant worse. He's a player that should have won an NCAA title like Anthony did a few years before him in the same circumstances. But Boeheim is a much better coach than Barnes.
Couldn't agree more. I struggle to think of a time we've come out of a TO and ran something that indicates he's a high-level X & O guy. Of course, he would argue they had the right play drawn up, but the players just didn't execute.Barnes runs a solid clean program with a winning system. Player development is outstanding. Having said all that, his in game coaching leaves a lot to be desired. This is his weakness for sure and is the reason for his postseason mediocrity.
So hoped he could fix that here.Rev Barnes is great in many ways and we should be thankful that we have him. He’s brought stability and national respectability to the program. He’s also brought in elite level talent, and that will continue.
However, he’s not a great “in game” coach. He doesn’t utilize timeouts well. He doesn’t draw up plays well. We don’t typically win games under him where late game strategy is a key factor. He has “it” when it comes to charisma, team building, motivation, and I think we usually come out prepared with a good strategy to start games. But in game adjustments, and crunch time bball IQ he doesn’t have “it.”
So long as he’s our coach going forward, the NCAA tournament bubble (either side of it) will be our floor, and the S16 maybe E8 is our ceiling. Which for Tenn basketball, if you look at the history, that’s really really good.
We’re very fortunate to have him, despite the frustration and let down games.
Kevin O’Neil is the reason he never had any real SEC players to coach.I think it is way underapprectiated what Kevin O'Neill did to totally turn around recruiting for Tennessee. I get it that he was a first class jerk, but his recruiting was the only reason Green had any success at all, in my opinion.
I would have liked to see what O'Neill could have done with real SEC level players to coach.
We have a staff of coaches to go along with CRB. They work together to scout, game planning / game prep, recruiting, etc. I have the impression they also share the in game coaching duties. If plays out of TO’s are not CRB’s strong suit, then let’s pick up an assistant who excels at that.So hoped he could fix that here.
We're not getting any of the blue bloods' coaches, so there really is no upgrade to Barnes. When he decides to retire, which I hope isn't for several years, it will be a highly attractive opening and we'll have some great choices. Mostly because of BarnesArchie Miller & Richard Pitino both fired today, 2 guys who got their names throw around on this board quite a bit in the past, Miller more than Pitino. Just shows hiring a coach is never a guarantee thing, not always an upgrade.
