Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Barnes won the SEC Tournament that hasn’t been done in 40 years.

Tied a single season school record beating Four Top 10 opponents.

But yeah, he’s clearly brought nothing to the program…
The sec championship was amazing I’m not discrediting that. The four top 10 wins?? Meh just another regular season achievement.
If It wasn’t for that sec championship I believe a lot more people would be on my side in this discussion..

And honestly coach barnes has underperformed in the sec tourney.. I mean he should have 2 or even 3 championships by now with the talent he’s had..
but as always his teams get to march And underperform greatly compared to the regular season hype.. do you see the pattern or is it just me?

Barnes is the only TN coach that has been to 3 SECT championship games. They play the SECT in March.

Nope sure wasn’t. Can you fill me in on some recruits that we are in on, or even someone from the transfer portal that is considering Tennessee??…
It’s been discussed a ton on this board, not sure how you’ve missed it…currently Tennessee is very aggressively recruiting Yuri Collins, Tyreke Key, Julian Phillips & Malik Reneau. They very likely will not land all 4 but those are the guys currently getting the attention of the staff.

I only label people as trolls when they have one sole purpose, and that is to whine and moan about the state of our program as if we are institutionally at the bottom of the barrel. That is how a lot of this comes across when it is never balanced out by anything positive. If someone believes that Barnes has done nothing to help accentuate the profile of our basketball program, then I can't help them, and we aren't likely to find common ground.

Would I like to see more success in the postseason? Sure. We won an SECT tournament title for the first time in my 42 years. That is worth celebrating, but I don't remember many (any) posts from the perpetual whiners in this thread giving him credit for it.

Would I have liked to have seen at least a S16 berth from this team? Sure. I think we underachieving, but I also recognize the randomness of the NCAAT and that we had to play a team who was ranked in the preseason top-5 for a reason. Michigan's talent didn't change. They just finally put it all together, and we shot as bad as we have all year. Barnes can only do so much to combat that from the bench. And quite frankly, some of the people bitching about it would complain all the way to the finals because they don't feel complete unless they have something to gripe over. A S16 isn't enough for some. For others, an E8 isn't enough. For others, we'll, they just knew Barnes would choke if he ever made a F4, and so on. Some people are just never satisfied unless they have some reason to voice displeasure that likely carries over from their own miserable lives into everything they try to indulge themselves in.

I find watching UT basketball in the NCAAT a very frustrating activity. Because it's always something that happens, whether we don't show up, we play the hot team, bad draw, etc.

But at the same time, if one is objective, they'll see it happens to tons of teams. I mean the NC game this year was a #1 seed versus an #8 seed. That alone should tell you how random things can be. To be honest the only time I think I will really be critical about an early NCAAT exit is if say we are far and away a #1, #2 team all year, ran through the SEC, won the SECT, and then get a #1 seed and not at least make an Elite 8, then I'll say that's a major fail.

Right.. you ever read the Carnell Tate or jasper thread in the recruiting forums?? Or several others I’m not gonna mention.. when the recruits actively show that Tennessee is a real contender or even a favorite?? Yes don’t see that in those you mentioned.

Beating this horse for 5+ years.

Barnes gives us very interesting seasonal play, will never get us past E8, and will seldom see S16.

Be happy with a SECT championship and SECT run deep every year with exciting basketball.

Lol ok, you’re right, we aren’t landing anyone…rolling into next year with 9 scholarship players!!!

Im just a fan like yourself. I honestly don’t know anyone off the top of my head, but I believe that our AD is more then capable of finding someone. Just with all the hype surrounding baseball, football and even the lady vols basketball program looks to be doing good and trending up. While the mens basketball team is IMO going the opposite direction.
I say all that to ask you, who would you consider being a replacement? I mean barnes is getting to the end of his career so this discussion will come up eventually.
How can you honestly say that, though? What proof is there of this claim? The opposite direction of what? What standard?

He has 4 NCAAT appearances in 7 opportunities following a period in which we missed the NCAAT in 5 of 6 years. He has stabilized and improved the state and profile of the program. He just won the SECT for the first time in 43 years, this year. He's finished in the top 2 of the SEC in 3 of the last 5 years.

Kentucky, the gold standard for SEC basketball, and John Calipari has a worse record across the last 5 seasons (Calipari is116-48, Barnes is 119-46), and not a whole lot more postseason success.

How is that heading in the wrong direction?

Would you trade the SECT Championship for a win over Michigan to advance to the Sweet 16 and lose to Villanova?

#5 is the highest AP final ranking in program history.

Except it’s not at all, wanna bet on next year being a tourney team?

I get what you're saying, but just making the tournament isn't good enough any more. At least for me it's not. This has been brought up a million times, but the second we started bringing in 5 star players and Barnes got the big raise and extension the expectations became much greater.
