Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Maybe he's going back to last season where TN had the same access to the Portal as every other team. what did he add?
What did he add? Lol.

I’m glad you asked…this time last year we were sitting there with a few open spots, we proceeded to add Jonas Aidoo, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, Justin Powell and Zakai Zeigler. But you’re right, no way we add anyone, Barnes will whiff like he always does SMH.

Justin Powell, who was considered a Top 10 transfer by many, dude. Also, that poster said we wouldn’t be adding anyone, recruited included, dude, so that’s why I included that. Acting as if our roster is set and there’s no way we add any sort of pieces to it is beyond dumb.

I'm fine with the recruiting but didn't think adding another wing was a good use of the TP. There were other good big men out there besides Kessler. I think Barnes was still believing he could mold Fulkerson into that 5 star lottery pick center he thought he should be.

AAh. don't sweat it. I just get tired of seeing the TROLL label every time someone makes a post that Barnes does anything less than walk on water. I don't understand why a guy with 30 years experience and 7 years in a program can't put a team on the floor that can put 2 together in the NCAA tourney. Good grief we were one of 3 in the top 10 on KenPom that didn't make the sw16. Same song every season and I can sympathize with people that thinks Barnes can do better. If that makes me a TROLL so be it.
67 of the 68 teams that had a chance to win the NCAA championship this year didn’t. I’m still amazed there are so many people who just don’t understand how many good teams have this same issue as Tennessee.

Don’t think he expected Fulky to regress, Aidoo to get mono and Nkahmoua to have a season ending injury, but again not the point…point was that OP is claiming we won’t add anyone when we literally added 4 players in the same time frame last year.

67 of 68 teams weren't top 10 in analytics, a #3 defense or have a coach come out and say they were a National championship Contender.

They keep slinging fast balls but you keep hitting them out of the park. Must be the aluminum in your post! Also everyone was kicking the Vols to the curb after the 2-3 start in SEC play which someone predicted could happen and low and behold they win the Conference tournament and tie for second in the league. Patience Grasshoppers.

With the roster we already have, we are consistently in the top 20 or peoples preseason polls. We lost KC and a bunch of role players. It’s also very possible we get more out of our 4/5 positions next year than we did at the end of this one.

It is good to see you have accepted your station in VOL life. As we have all heard in sports before, you are what your record says you are. Another applicable classification is NEGAVOL. You can't possibly argue with that evaluation. There is a vast middle ground between sunshine pumping and the NEGA station in life, and maybe you should shoot for it. Arrogance in doubling down on one's own evaluations is what it is. A really bad honest inquiry of others thoughts to declarative sentence ratio is telling as well. Redundant use of rhetorical questions is a tool that does not elicit good faith acceptance of one's opinions and inspires negative responses.

It is one thing to establish lofty goals, another to employ them as expectations. Life happens, and balls bounce. Not everyone places a high value on integrity. Some of us fear replacing a probable Hall of Famer from a candidate pool that includes guys from the Wade and Tyndall pools and maybe even from winners that seem to push integrity envelopes like Pearl. Risk reward is what it is. But those fans calling for change rarely stand up and accept some responsibility for the consequences, just reroute their demands to the new coaches or the guys that hired them in response to the public outcries and do so with their big bucks disclaimers. Usually don't allow for the possibilities that the big bucks guys being on top of it when making hold decisions.

I respect those that pick their battles and their methods and data sets wisely. Others, not so much. You can coach with class and fan with class just like you can play with class. I too reserve the right to have and express my opinions, just try to make sure I do not over value them.

Not sure what the proper response to this would be. Get BENT or OkAY? Take yer pick. I've never called for Barnes' head. Just for him to get it out of his u know what.

I only label people as trolls when they have one sole purpose, and that is to whine and moan about the state of our program as if we are institutionally at the bottom of the barrel. That is how a lot of this comes across when it is never balanced out by anything positive. If someone believes that Barnes has done nothing to help accentuate the profile of our basketball program, then I can't help them, and we aren't likely to find common ground.

Would I like to see more success in the postseason? Sure. We won an SECT tournament title for the first time in my 42 years. That is worth celebrating, but I don't remember many (any) posts from the perpetual whiners in this thread giving him credit for it.

Would I have liked to have seen at least a S16 berth from this team? Sure. I think we underachieving, but I also recognize the randomness of the NCAAT and that we had to play a team who was ranked in the preseason top-5 for a reason. Michigan's talent didn't change. They just finally put it all together, and we shot as bad as we have all year. Barnes can only do so much to combat that from the bench. And quite frankly, some of the people bitching about it would complain all the way to the finals because they don't feel complete unless they have something to gripe over. A S16 isn't enough for some. For others, an E8 isn't enough. For others, we'll, they just knew Barnes would choke if he ever made a F4, and so on. Some people are just never satisfied unless they have some reason to voice displeasure that likely carries over from their own miserable lives into everything they try to indulge themselves in.
Excellent post. Sums up my feelings exactly. Not going to bother debating about Barnes anymore. He’s with us till he he wants to retire and I’m fairly sure that’s several more years. These clowns can continue to waste their time moaning and whining and that’s up to them how they want to waste their time. I’m not going to bother with them again. They need to enjoy what Barnes has done for the program because he ain’t going anywhere. End of discussion.

I hope it’s not as bad.. potentially could be.. I hate making this thread bc I’ve really backed up everything Barnes has done.. but when you step back and look at the picture without our orange glasses on.. the future at Tennessee basketball is always going to be a defensive team first that struggles on offense with coach Barnes and even more obvious is he doesnt win in march.. I mean if we hadn’t won the sec tournament this year this offseason would have been a failure and the start of his end at Tennessee.
Umm, but we did win the SEC tournament. Not sure what your point is.

According to him we’ve missed on everyone and will get nobody
I didn’t say we have missed everybody in the portal or that we will miss everybody. I simply said we missed a lot of big recruits and after going through our recruiting forum in basketball I see nothing showing evidence that we are in on any big recruits or transfers.. unlike the other big schools in the sec.. if you know of some transfer or high profile recruit that I don’t know please share.

I think we may be in on several potential significant transfers. I don't have solid evidence of specific ones, but I don't think you have solid evidence that we're not in on any. I think that's the point some are making. A lot can still happen.

You are not wrong about that. They are getting after it, and it's easy to get impatient.
But I also remember when Barnes was in his first year here, and he signed a class that included Grant Williams, Jordan Bone, Jordan Bowden, and John Fulkerson. He got roasted for his "lazy" recruiting, but that class turned out okay. You have to be patient and see how things play out.

I guess I am becoming impatient.. I just don’t see how Rick Barnes is going to be the man that brings Tennessee to new horizons.. I know people will counter with well who would you hire them? The answer is I honestly don’t know but I know the AD has some names in mine that is gonna be the man who comes in after Barnes..

Supposedly in on Malik Reneau but I've searched everywhere for our offer. Anyone have a link?

Can't believe I glossed over this BS thread.

Did Son of God ever man-up and pick Barnes's successor? "Somebody like CTV" isn't very specific.
Im just a fan like yourself. I honestly don’t know anyone off the top of my head, but I believe that our AD is more then capable of finding someone. Just with all the hype surrounding baseball, football and even the lady vols basketball program looks to be doing good and trending up. While the mens basketball team is IMO going the opposite direction.
I say all that to ask you, who would you consider being a replacement? I mean barnes is getting to the end of his career so this discussion will come up eventually.

Barnes won the SEC Tournament that hasn’t been done in 40 years.

Tied a single season school record beating Four Top 10 opponents.

But yeah, he’s clearly brought nothing to the program…
