He did have one split regular season championship here. Care to guess who we split with? I’ll give you a further hint, the same individual has 3 regular season titles and a tourney title
Yeah-they mentioned that previously in the thread so I didn’t list. And full credit to Rick because it was a heck of a monkey to get off our backs. Arguably his best achievement here when history is considered.Rick has a tournament title too. People talk about split titles, but the imbalanced schedule creates that. You will never have an outright title unless you play the exact same schedule.
So, is it possible to praise Barnes as a solid coach, decent man, and all around good guy, albeit a bit arrogant, and still feel like he has peaked?
He will have Tennessee relevant in the SEC race, and will likely qualify for the NCAAs most years, if not nearly every year. He will amass a good regular season record, and Tennessee will be ranked for most, if not all, of each season. That said, his teams will peak in late December/January, have glaring recruiting gaps (which shift a bit, but usually involve a lack of a true point guard and offensive-capable big), will look exhausted by mid February, and bow out of the NCAAs in the first weekend.
I mean, that's not a bad showing by any means, and overall our program is healthy. But I truly feel that if we want to compete for a FF appearance or even a NC, Barnes just isn't the guy.
It just seems like a lot of folks see this as binary: you are either fully in support of Barnes in every area, or you want him fired tomorrow. Kinda reminds me of the debates in the late Fulmer era.

Not many coaches out there with Final Fours are their resume are going to come here.
Had he peaked a year ago before winning the SECT?
Another false narrative, btw, is that Pearl came to UT when the cupboard was bare and somehow built a winner out of nothing. Absolutely not true. His first team (2005) had C.J. Watson, Chris Lofton, Dane Bradshaw, Jajuan Smith, and Major Wingate on the roster. Undersized, yes, but nothing to sneeze at.
