Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Barnes is a solid Coach. I'm sure he's a good guy, but he's only good for a 2nd round run. He's proved it time in and time out. Not shocked about scoring, it's been a Barnes issue for years.
That’s enough for a lot of regular posters on here, and they’ll lose their minds if want the program to aim higher, go farther…I think we are all seeing how vulnerable we are come tourney time , because we don’t have offensive options if Santi and ZZZ aren’t playing well.

Not making excuses but I have a brain.. tell me who are you hiring? You are thinking out of emotion.. I bet you didn’t want to fire him Wednesday, people like you must wake up and piss excellence and **** rainbows because In real life you just have bad days, 40% of fans are just doom and gloom..
You don’t have a brain because I didn’t say anything about firing Barnes.

Kentucky is better without Wheeler and Fredrick. Not having them forces Cal to play their most athletic lineups
Wheeler, maybe. Frederick. No. And I don’t even necessarily agree on Wheeler at all times. When you play a team like TN and have ZZ against Wallace, yes they are better without Wheeler.

Each team is more infuriating than the last lol
I'd have to really look at the schedule but it feels this team has beat every top 10 matchup by double digits or with command at least, and then get embarrassed by mediocre teams. How do they get embarrassed against vandy mizzu then whip Bama with 2 guys out then are getting embarrassed again at Rupp? Home court doesn't help THAT much.
I agree with this and for the first time I honestly would rather play good teams in the tournament rather than mediocre ones lol we play lights out vs top 25 this year

Agree. we could do ALOT WORSE than Barnes.

IMO, we need to hold onto Barnes unless we just start having NIT or worse seasons. He has us in the mix despite our glaring flaws with his teams. That is better than what most coaches can do for our program. Part of the reason we have such high expectations is Barnes coaching/recruiting.
Barnes is there until he decides to retire.

So, once again, we are in a binary world of 'Barnes Haters' and 'Barnes Sycophants"??

Last night was an excellent effort, and whoever scouted Bama on our staff should get a paid day off. The scouting was masterful, the players played lights out, especially our bigs, and Barnes did an excellent job of in-game adjustments.

I say that as the poster who kinda started this last round of posts, and I do not think I am a 'hater', just trying to be realistic about the program. In any event, since I was in the slightest bit critical of Barnes, I am sure I am so labeled, so wanted to make an appearance and congratulate coach and the team for a great effort last night.
Thanks for posting this. Assuming the score holds today-the only blame i place for that on Rick is recruiting and developing offensive identity and consistency. He’s had the best run vs UK of any TN coach and that can’t be disregarded.

I agree with you that you’ll be harangued for any level of criticism though. It’s possible to be a bit critical while noting Barnes is the coach we need. It’s also possible to say Barnes is our guy without pretending other coaches in prior years contributed to great TN teams and that Barnes doesn’t need these guys torn down to have a legacy.

Good post. I for one don’t want CRB fired. But I don’t get the fact that we can’t be critical of his lack of success in the tournament, without hearing the same old “who else are we gonna get” or “we have no prior history” refrains. Or being called “Barnes hater” or “Troll”. CRB has stabilized the program, but man would be nice to take that next step sometime. Can we please get past the SS? I just don’t see it this year with our offensive limitations.

Yeah-my name for the Barnes fundamentalists who don’t allow their deity to be criticized is the Barnes Bathwater Army. I don’t think we’ll turn into Georgetown the minute Barnes retires. We’ve got resources, facilities, an awesome AD, and relevancy because of the efforts of Barnes and Bruce Pearl.

As for the tourney, I like the fact that we have elite defense and think that will show up this year. Should also help us with those pesky free-firing mid-majors. I really worry that we just can’t score the points for a deep run. Given the lack of dominance in the sport, who knows what might happen.

On the topic of Barnes lack of success in the tournament. I totally get the frustration, and criticism. I'm rooting for him to get over that hump before he retires, because with what he's done, and I know people hate to hear it,he's stabilized the program, and he'll retire at Tennessee. Hopefully,it will happen if not this year, then in the next few years before he calls it a career.

Counter point to the “he doesn’t win in the tournament” thing

How much tournament success have Clemson, Texas, and Tennessee had without Barnes?

Good point. I think the more accurate term would be tournament appearances rather than tournament success (unless we’re talking conference tourney too). He’s been exceptional and true to his hall of fame status with regard to appearances. When it comes to actual success at the tournament, it’s been lacking relative to his other achievements here and elsewhere.
