He’s a good coach, but funny how people forget all the Bruce Pearl teams that did the exact same thing we’re seeing now… ugly offense that struggles unless it gets bailed out by shooters.Rick Barnes, in my opinion is one of the best coaches in college basketball, however, I do not see him as winning a national championship. Having been /and still a Vol lifetime I am going to make a very controversial statement. I still believe that Bruce Pearl is the best college basketball coach in America. I really do not care what anyone thinks of this statement and you can hollar all you like. I stand firm on my conviction......................UTM alum! Would not be a bit surprised if he does not win it all this year.
No, it's not set up like every major sport. It's not a playoff. It's a one and done tournament. Playoffs are series between those who qualify.I can only speak for myself but you are correct I am not a Barnes fan. I played basketball in high school and one year in college before I dropped out to start my own business. I was a 1 in HS and 2 in college and played with a guy who went to KY and then the Bulls. I have coached the local 6th grade team and was an assistant to my old school for a few years to help a long time friend. The thing is NCAAM basketball is set up just like every other major sport with a playoff system. The regular season is great but it’s not the point of the season. The point of the season is to make the playoffs/tournaments and then win it. It’s why Cinderella stories become some huge. The tournament matters. Barnes is great in record play but when it’s win or go home his teams have just not historically lived up to the seed. It’s tough because I am a realist and I know the ceiling is sweet 16 with Barnes. I love UT and want to see the Orange take down some nets. It’s never gonna happen under him. With Pearl, there was a shot. He had gotten Auburn deeper into the tourney than Barnes has at UT. Hope is a huge thing for a fan base and with Barnes I rarely have any hope he will go deep in the tournament. I also hope I am proved wrong. I would love to see this team go final four and make me eat my words. I just don’t see it happening though. But I’d love to be wrong.
So, with Pearl there was a shot and not with CRB...interesting. First off, both coaches have the same number of E8's and rank in the top15 or so for best NCAA tournament winning % among active coaches.I can only speak for myself but you are correct I am not a Barnes fan. People forget that that Cuonzo team was dead in the water to Iowa in Dayton before Josh Richardson caught fire for 4 straight games. Not a knock on Cuonzo, just shows how crazy the tournament can be and how one player going off can flip a whole bracket on its head. For all the grief Cuonzo Martin got, some of it deserved, his one trip to the tournament was as good as Barnes best trip here.
I’m not trying to make an indictment about Barnes, just thought it was interesting. Regular season there’s absolutely no comparing the two. There’s not many coaches that could’ve done for us what Rick has.
A best of three would be interesting to see. I enjoy the regular season but it’s all about the end result- March Madness- imo. Some people believe the regular season is just as, or even more important. Regular season success reveals the very best teams. I get the tournament influence. We had a 4, two 5s and a 9 in the Final Four last year. They weren't the 4 best teams, BUT they made it through a one and done crapshoot. A best of 3 from Sweet 16 through Final Four would change things drastically. Anything outside a 4 seed would be an anomaly in the final four
Oh absolutely. The tournament is crazy and players catching fire is part of what makes it special. Hopefully we can catch some this year. Us and Barnes are both due to at some point.People forget that that Cuonzo team was dead in the water to Iowa in Dayton before Josh Richardson caught fire for 4 straight games. Issue has been our players have a habit of fizzling in March.People forget that that Cuonzo team was dead in the water to Iowa in Dayton before Josh Richardson caught fire for 4 straight games. Not a knock on Cuonzo, just shows how crazy the tournament can be and how one player going off can flip a whole bracket on its head.
That elite 8 team was good. For all the grief Cuonzo Martin got, some of it deserved, his one trip to the tournament was as good as Barnes best trip here.

If he was actually the best - and anybody trusted him- he wouldn’t be at Auburn.
Exactly… I do think Pearl overachieved with a couple of overmatched teams, but some people get a little revisionist talking about his tenure here.Pearl has one thing over Barnes.....an EE run that was likely made much more favorable by Ohio upsetting Georgetown. The rest of his teams usually underachieved in March.
