Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

You're too funny. I will bet a shiny new dime you were nowhere to be seen when we won the 2022 SEC tournament. You brought up record and I provided you with facts. Do you understand?
I remember 2022 tournament quite well. I was thrilled. Two games letter, my heart was broken yet again as well failed to make the sweet 16

You mean like the 2022 SEC tournament? Or the Bahamas tournament last year?
Those are all nice indeed. But long term, there is only one tournament that history remembers unfortunately.
Don’t get me wrong, hoping we change that this year. But 20% shooting and a weak three point defense ain’t going to get it done. Something isn’t right on this team right now

I don't know. It's easy to say that, but the game of basketball explains it best

No, I meant even Steven should be able to take this Tennessee roster to E8.

We have a legit first round draft choice, 2 Euro starters, all-SEC point guard and 7’ all SEC center in starting lineup and can’t stay close to a 9 seed team. Can’t even score 60 points against a 9 seed with a loaded lineup

Do you mean Bruce? If so, I agree. The only coach of the top SEC teams to win yesterday. He knows how to motivate his team! ;)
Sure, the same Bruce Pearl that went 6-6 in the SECT at UT with two seasons not winning a game and another failing to reach the semifinals.

And that’s why I’m mad.
If they lost 85-92 or something and had guys shooting better, maybe even shot 40 percent as a team, I wouldn’t be as upset.
Actually, I’d be mad at the lack of defense, so maybe I lied. However, defenses lapses are much more rare than the offensive droughts we’ve seen, so I don’t think I would have lost as much confidence going forward if we lost a competitive, high scoring game, as I did yesterday.

Steven is where he’s at today because of his daddy. He was terrrible at UT and once again was on the team because of daddy.

It’s a valid point, but yesterday the Vols couldn’t throw it in the ocean

True but for Barnes the last few years at least it seems like his team hits offensive droughts pretty frequently. I don't know what causes it but it seems to happen a lot for Barnes here.

Excellent in season coach. As far as tournaments go, Stephen Pearl could take us farther.

Which do you prefer? If Stephen had this roster, he would probably make sweet 16.
You could have chosen so many coaches to try to take your point, and you choose that guy? You have absolutely nothing to base such a statement on. He’s not even the best and most accomplished assistant coach on that staff and has accomplished nothing without his Dad handing it to him.

Also, I am pretty sure we made the Sweet 16 last year. Stephen wouldn’t have this roster, first of all. You think Knecht would have come here to play for him? Come on.

Yes, those November/December tourneys are what CBB is all about. Very similar to the exhibition games we’ve won against Gonzaga and Michigan State. Good Lord.

He said tournament. I get your take, but the same ignorant comments came after we got beat by Purdue and Kansas in Hawaii earlier this year. The SEC tournament championship was just 2 years ago. I mentioned that too

My point being, Barnes is excellent in season coach. He will never get UT to FF and probably not to E8. He just isn’t a motivator. He is excellent in developing, but very average or below average in motivating.

Yeah, you don’t do what he’s done by being bad at motivating your players. Just because he’s not out there chest bumping and acting like a fool doesn’t mean he doesn’t motivate players. Even so, no idea why you’d choose to bring baby Pearl into this to try to make your point. He wouldn’t take this roster to the state semi-finals.

How do you know? I would say after losing at Texas A&M and winning at Rupp a few days later was all motivation. There's an actual example that throws your armchair opinion in the trash

Let me make it second grade to you. ANY half decent asst coach should be able to get this loaded roster to the S16. End of discussion with you.
