Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

So, with Pearl there was a shot and not with CRB...interesting. First off, both coaches have the same number of E8's and rank in the top15 or so for best NCAA tournament winning % among active coaches.

Next, while at UT, both coaches have taken us to the NCAA tournament 6 times which is a feat in and of itself for UT...here is the breakdown:

First round exits: 1 each
Second round exits: 2 each
S16 exits: 2 each
E8 exits: 1 for Pearl

Seems eerily similar to me...and that's despite the important context of the unfortunate injuries we had to deal with right at tourney time to key players (e.g., Alexander, Fulky, ZZ) which played a huge factor in 3 exits...but that equates to somehow "never gonna happen" with CRB in your mind but Bruce always had a chance?

Oh, plus CRB actually won a tournament which matters and hung a banner unlike Bruce...the SEC tournament.

And, if this team manages to make an E8 or better as many analysts have predicted, CRB will have EXACTLY the same success while at UT.

Bottom line...how you arrived at this great chasm between Pearl and CRB seems quite dubious.

Pearl just won the SEC tourney. You need to edit your post.

No, and I don't think we ever made a final with him

Pearl just keeps getting better. Barnes peaked back in the Bush Presidency era. He has done way more at Auburn than Barnes has here. Pearl would have done just as well here if not better. Man just knows how to coach games that matter. Barnes in the other hand just sits there on the sidelines like a fan and enjoys the game. Barnes brings zero in game energy.

I think it’s close but nobody is in here saying Pearl is a bad coach…
Didn't say it was...in fact it wasn't close.....I just asked what the H2H was....As a couple years ago it seems Pearl was up a few game.

As far as a motivator and floor coach and system...I'd take Pearl if I had to make a hire.

Didn’t win one here and took him ten years to win one at Auburn so not exactly sure what point you think you’re making if the argument is what both accomplished while here.

Second SECT championship. Pearl won the SEC tournament back in 2019, unfortunately by beating Tennessee in the finals. I'll never forget that one. Best Tennessee team in ages and that game probably cost us the #1. And then Auburn rode that all the way to the Final Four.

I agree Bruce is a good coach and in fact I think is a better coach now than when he was at UT. But you lose all credibility with your nonsensical statements about Rick Barnes. Total hogwash.

You are correct. That was a thrashing. Suppose I had wiped that one from the halls of my memory.

Your stance on Barnes is dog sh*t.

Maybe stop posting unless you love embarrassing yourself.

Miss St.

Near the end of the game we had the ball down one and I think twice we couldn't get the ball inbounded.

Painful game to watch. Honestly a painful season. The SEC was a horrible, three bid league that season and we only managed a 10-6 conference record.

Sorry I brought it back then, man, because it's one of the lousiest memories I've got. Right up there with Ohio State's 35 free throws, which I got watch live. I wish I could forget them both.

Let's hope we make some better ones this tournament.

Your stance on Barnes is asinine. It’s fair to say Bruce is a great coach. It’s even fair to argue he’s better than Barnes. Failing to admit that Barnes has had a historic run that is every bit as good as Pearl’s run here is foolish, though.

Barnes has only reached the final four one time in his whole career which was 2003 when Bush was president. That is his peak. Facts hurt. I get it.

It’s a valid point, but yesterday the Vols couldn’t throw it in the ocean
Yeah and for sure I don’t think any one game is on a coach. And I think Rick Barnes is a great coach. It does seem like he underachieves pretty consistently in tournament basketball. But I certainly want him to be here as long as he wants. With our history, complaining about getting a 2 seed is pretty wonderful
