Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

It’s really odd how many folks have disappeared…yes there’s always the drive by’s but posters like @zjcvols, @calban, @mr.checkerboards and @1985Vols just going radio silent in the BB forum is strange…hopefully they’re all ok.
No reason to B#### when they win and look good doing it and the old man actually tries something different. Miss St was a good road win against a tough defensive team. Glad JJJ has finally found it.
Sorry the Realists make it so hard on the SSP Nancies.

Some people are only happy when they’re miserable. I’ll never understand it.
I would hate to have to work for one of these “realists”. Constantly nit picking everything you do with the rare “good job” when things go perfect and they can’t find anything to complain about. Come to think of it, I did work for an arse like that once and it sucked!

Improved offense??? We shot 34% and had 5 more turnovers than assists.

We played well defensively and SEC road wins are always a positive but this offense is still a tire fire
This offense is limited a lot more by size and athleticism than they are by scheme. This offense is radically altered from the Grant/Admiral/Bone era to take advantage of the three, key to bucket drives, and wing drives. I’m impressed that our three guards are able to consistently produce and wear down bigger more athletic guards. It would be great to see the young post players come on. If they do, we’ll be hard to defend. If there is a weakness in scheme, it’s the fact that it leaves Fulky very little room to operate. He’s lost a lot of physical strength and he’s not a threat backing people down. There are times where we need to back out of ball screen dependence and work to creat room for his short jumpers, hooks and short drives. If our middle becomes a threat, we’re a top ten team.

It really is bizarre, do some of these folks legitimately prefer losing?

The biggest gripe most have with Barnes is his lack of postseason success. Winning a game in early February doesn't alter that stance at all. If this team falters and gets embarrassed in March again, this stretch of play becomes totally irrelevant. So you guys might want to hold off on your victory lap.

Aren't we pretty much right where Vegas expected us to be? That's your mantra right when people get too low on the program? Shouldn't that work for both sides of the pendulum swing?

This thread was started mid-season, so not sure it had much to do with tourney success or lack there of?

And no, a projected 3/4 seed is not where Tennessee was expected to be by Vegas, nice try though.

It’s not a victory lap, just a question/observation…why aren’t the folks who post 100x after a loss posting at all and enjoying the stretch of good play? If we revert back and suck they’ll post again, so why not enjoy any W’s?

You have be among the Legion of the Misérables to be complaining about this team right now so they are moving on to Barnes post season record for reasons. They will always find something. I don't wear orange colored glasses either and I am a realist and I see a team playing really good BB right now which reflects on the coaching staff.

Tourney seeding has a lot to do with other teams and their performance, not just ours. Vegas had our win total at 24.5 (that number includes postseason). We appear to be heading right at that don't you think? You aren't betting on what seed your team will have in the preseason. I applaud your failed effort in moving the goalposts though.

So you mean to tell me that the largest gripe posters have had about Barnes isn't related to March? Hell, I'll do you one better. The 2 main issues with Barnes have been his offense and lack of success in March. One looks better of late and the other hasn't had a chance to be altered. The timing of a thread is irrelevant to the actual facts.

The team is playing well and should be praised for it. There was some fair criticism mid-season especially with the offense. While obviously some of it is over the top and posters just venting. I did some major venting myself during the Texas game but I think the last few minutes of that game is where the turn around with our offense started. Yeah, we had scrapped through a couple of games before that but the offense still wasn't clicking.

Last night was the first I sat down and watched in over two weeks this team (I didn’t even watch the Texas game). I have been doing other stuff besides watching sports (other than the NFL playoffs) as I took time off between jobs. I saw the second half. I am liking how we played. It was a good road win. For the first time we are getting better in February. Hopefully it continues.

They’ve beaten Texas A&M, South Carolina and Mississippi State since the loss to Texas. They’ve played well. I’m liking where they’re going. The offense is finally gelling better based on what I saw yesterday. But I still have questions about this team when it comes to March. And they won’t get answered until we get there.

Also, college basketball is just terrible to watch in general and it’s hard to watch Tennessee even. The officiating has ruined the sport so bad it’s not worth my time. As plenty of you know I’m a big Michigan fan as well and I haven’t watched them play five games this year. I have better things to do than watch 50-60 something year old college referees with beer belly’s trying to officiate a game that is way too fast for them and then make it about themselves. Just not worth my time.

You forgot “$5 million”…wish I had a dollar for every time somebody who doesn’t pay $0.01 of that salary griped about it!

Stop and smell the flowers. You miss a lot in life if you don't.

I’m convinced that across all Tennessee athletics there is a vocal minority that actually relish in UT sports struggles because it gives them some weird sense of satisfaction when they have reason to complain.

Whether it’s NIL haters in the Recruiting Forum, Barnes bashers in the Basketball Forum, or just literally all of the Football Forum, so many “fans” enjoy the losses which is just plain weird.

I have my moments of negativity on game days because I get overly invested in the results, but it’s hard to not be really happy with where all of UT athletics is right now. We should just enjoy it. All 3 major sports are relevant (and 2 of them are elite).

Please link the 24.5 wins, seems a bit high…also keep in mind that we lost a game on our schedule so not sure how that’s factored into that? Projections preseason had us 20-11/21-10, that was including Memphis, without it those are 19-12/20-10, it would appear that we will at the very least hit the high end of that. And actually you can bet on NCAAT Championship odds, preseason our odds were around 30th best, where are those at now?

I’m posting in this thread, asking where all the complainers went, which you’ve yet to answer…that’s the fact.

Whether fair or not, people use this place as a way to vent frustrations. It’s why game threads are usually more active during losses than wins (in all of UT sports). People come here to vent with other people instead of venting to their kids, parents, partners, roommates, etc. I don’t think it’s relishing , it’s a way for people to blow off steam about their sports teams.

Oh, I don't disagree at all. I never take anything said in game threads seriously. I've said my fair share of negative things over the years in game threads. I'm not my best self in game threads. But, my wife has zero desire to listen to my frustrations during the game, so I have to put that somewhere haha.

I do think it's the rest of the negativity across the board and the inability to ever say anything good about the team that can get old.

I’m the same way. Other than texting my dad, I don’t really have a place to talk college ball and Tennessee. So this is about the only place. And like I said my interest in college basketball in general is significantly waning anyways.

No I get it. I don’t mind Barnes talk and engage in it but I try and avoid salary discussions or when the coach at the plains gets mentioned I don’t even engage. It’s not worth discussing those type of things.

If by 'realists', you mean people who complain about everything and disappear into thin air after a solid win, I don't think you grasp the concept of the term. I have my criticisms still do. Doesn't mean I get my jollies off railing on the team, coaches, etc every chance I get. It's always good to breathe and not make knee jerk in game comments until after we see the end result. I do it myself, but I'm not on here posting about it.
