Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Simply look at our Road Games This Season.
There is a difference is between shot Selection, Confidence, Offense Movement and other Areas.
Yes the Refs will affect the Flow of the Game, but CRB Coaches differently on the Road than he does at home.
Several passed up several early shots in the game. Why? Motion Offense not as intense.

Our Road Games and losses are great indicators, but against ranked teams our average is in the 50s.
Villanova, Texas Tech, Alabama, LSU, Texas, Arkansas and KY. @KY we had no choice but to abandoned the game plan to catch up....
Hence the reason for early exits.

This is his achilles heal

Well, it’s a good thing we won’t play true road games in March. I suspect most teams would struggle to win games on the road at LSU, Alabama, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

In Essence, We do play Road Games in March. Neutral Sites are Road Games and depending on the Region it could be a Cross Country Road Game. It is whether or not CRB coaches it differently or sticks with the Road Game Coach Plan. He Coaches differently away from Home which normally results in low Scoring, Defensive Struggles unless he has an Elite Team. This team is special but home does not carry over to the Road....WHY?

Furthermore, the REFs are calling the game differently than the SEC Refs. There is zero consistency in the league much less between the conferences or nationally.

I don't wish to argue with you, when you are obviously not following your own conversation.

You implied days ago, that CRB teams struggle in "games that matter". We win against Kentucky and the offense looked pretty good. This is why posters have replied to your comment that we played good in a game that mattered. We obviously did not play well yesterday and you magically make an appearance. (Now that I have caught you up to speed on the conversation, have a great day).
I will admit that I didn't realize this was posted Wed. So my apologies for the confusion. I thought this was posted following last nights game.
I would like to further explain my point of "games that matter" as when it "matters most" - I'm talking big picture not individual games. Its looking less likely that Tenn will win the SEC regular season, which means while the Kentucky win was great and "mattered" in one sense, in a bigger sense it didn't as much.
Barnes best team here didn't even win SEC outright, didn't win the SEC tourney and got bounced in the 2nd round of the NCAA. It was a really nice year and I loved watched guys like the Admiral but they didn't win when it really mattered. It's hard for me to see him having a better chance at a FF appearance than then.
The reason I "magically" showed up after a loss is because I don't visit VN as frequent during football off-season and I wanted to see the next comments following more inconsistent play. I didn't even get to watch the Kentucky game btw
It's funny, I told my dad last night it seems when I go over and watch it with him they lose and he said he noticed that 😂.

Explain this different coaching philosophy away from home. Looks like on average we shoot the same shots better at TBA vs away. I don’t notice a clear difference in the types of shots or the offense being different

I mean, I get your point, and I agree we do need to play better on the road, but we’re not the only team that struggles away.

All of Auburn and Kentucky’s losses have come away from home. All but one of Purdue and Villanova’s losses have come away from home. I’m sure I could provide more examples if I felt like digging through all of the committee’s Top 16.

The thing is we’ve played a brutal schedule this year away from home. I definitely would have liked to see this team be better on the road, and that is disappointing, but we’ve only played one real “big” non-conference game at home and that was Arizona. The way this year’s schedule lined up we had Villanova, North Carolina, Texas, Texas Tech, Colorado, and Memphis all away from TBA.

I have a feeling if I spent some time and dig into every team’s schedule around us in the Top 16 few would have played as many tough games away from home as we have.

It’s been a monumentally tough season with our schedule. Performing this poorly on the road isn’t great, but when you played the schedule we have played it’s not hard to see why. We’ve just got to hope that all of this has prepared us for March and will pay off.

I have certainly complained about Barnes from time to time but yesterday is not one of those times if we simply hit our average shooting percentage yesterday we win that game by 15 points we had wide-open shot after wide-open shot clank off the rim there’s not anything coach can do about that during the game! Players need to make plays and they didn’t do it! Everyone needs to remember Arkansas is a bad matchup for us anyway and they are just as hot as we have been at home we weren’t favored to win relax everybody

I can't because I am not in the locker Room or on staff, but just compare the KY Game and the Arkansas game.
Go to the Texas Game, Go to the Texas Tech. The 10 point difference yesterday was largely due to poor Officiating.
Explain how we cannot get into a flow with good officiating and how the motion offense was relatively non existent yesterday.
Why several players in the first 10 minutes past up 3 point shots that they would not have done at TBA.
You watch the replays and tell me....
Our losses on the road are to ranked teams so tell me what the common Denominator is?

Avg Points without the KY game is 56.5
Average with KY 59.7
Take out the KY, AL and LSU Away games and the Average is 51.0 for those 4 losses.

Do I think we are finishing the Season 4-0 yes....Do I think we could struggle in the Away Games Yes but 10 point + wins

Motion Offense was not there last night. Movement without the ball at times but not constant....

My simple answer is the good shots didn’t fall and we got plenty of good shots. Away games are tough, especially at progressives with good support and the accepted officiating bias so you have to execute a little better on the road to win. We didn’t.

You said Barnes coaches differently away from home. I don’t understand what your seeing to make you think that?

There will be another tough defensive battle against CCM and Missouri in Columbia Tuesday night.

I expect that game to be in the high 50's to low 60's scoring wise.

You can compare games away and home IMO he coaches more conservatively on the road. The officiating definitely affected the game flow and outcome.
My thoughts are to watch the Missouri and Georgia Games vs the next two home games Auburn and Arkansas.
There has been a lot of success inside-out game. A lot of things did not happen, yesterday.
The Charge foul calls were all somewhat questionable. After the Ky Let down game?
We had a tough road opponent that we could have beaten vs should have beaten. It was a toss-up going into this game.
Redemption will come and we have an opportunity to capture the 2nd seed for the SEC tourney with a little help and by going 4-0.
I want the 3 seed at least that means winning out which I think we are capable of doing.
I just don't want Barnes to get too close for comfort with Missouri and Georgia.
Every time this team gets to the hump, there has been a bad officiating game or a change in approach that has cost us in the long run.
We need that Special Quad 1 win away from TBA and hopefully, we will get them at the SEC Tourney. 2 games that will get them over the hump.
Missouri win is critical and we should win this by no less than 10 points same with Georgia.
Yesterday we got screwed. How many games have you seen Phanton fouls called in games where Tennessee was on the verge of getting over the hump. LSU Grant Williams Foul.
When I see 3 players with 4 fouls in a critical game these players were targeted from the start not much you can do about that.
What concerned me more was in the first 10 to 12 minutes how many threes were turned down. I may be wrong but we only attempted 10 3 pt shots in the first 20 minutes.

Missouri is not even close defensively as compared to Texas Tech, Texas, LSU, and Arkansas. They are barely in the top 150.

Beating. Kentucky. Always. Matters.

Do you really think that’s because he’s coaching differently? I don’t see how that would make sense. Basketball is such a streaky game so I think what’s happening is the home team is almost always more jacked whether that be UT or anyone else. Add to that the home crowd, being more used to your own court, knowing your rims, etc. and it all adds up to being way more difficult to win on the road than at home. Neutral site games are similar except both teams are dealing with the same issues and no one has the home crowd. So we get on the road and all these factors come into play and I think our young guards start to press a little, then other players start to press a little and next thing you know we’ve taken a few bad shots or given away turnovers in a few possessions and we’re down 10. Against the level of competition we’ve played away from home it doesn’t take much to lose. These are all top 20 teams. There’s no shame in losing the road games we have not the neutral games we have. What if be curious to see and we will get the chance is would we be better in those neutral site games now and I believe that answer is yes. I believe we would beat Tx Tech if we played that again now. Nova maybe, maybe not but we would certainly play them better than we did the first time. I see improvement in this team and I do believe we will make the Sweet 16 but I’m not sure beyond that. Beyond the Sweet 16 likely depends on matchups.

How can you say we should win any road game by “x” points? Look at Auburn. They beat Mizzou and UGA on the road by one possession. Then they lost at Arkansas and at Florida. The road is just a different animal.

I have to laugh at all the carping about Barnes. Some fans here act like the program is Duke or Kansas. We're lucky to have Barnes.
Though we have substantially less tradition in basketball than football, Barnes is a far better coach than any equivalent football coach that
we've hired in a long time. He and his staff have recruited well--three 5 stars in the last two years-- and raised the status of the BB program significantly. We could have made the Final Four 4 years ago had it not been for a stupid foul on a Purdue player who was practically shooting from out of bounds. We could be a 3 seed in the NCAA this year. Do I wish that Bruce Pearl hadn't committed a dumb violation and not lied about it and was still our coach? Yea, I do, but failing that I'm pretty glad we have Barnes.

This may be Barnes best team. This has to be by far his greatest defensive team he’s had here. The offense is a toss up but it seems like we found good energy and momo coming out of half. Vescovi seemed to be on backend of his slump. JJJ is staying steady Eddie.

At this point all the nega-Barnes have to hold on to is tourney success, god bless them if we make an E8

The Gods will bail them out because I’m sure we will be the best 3-4 seed in the toughest bracket.

What would crack me up is if we won out, won the SEC tourney, and cracked a 2 seed. Barnes Haters would have no idea what to do with themselves.
