Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

You asked a question and I answered. I'm not acting like anything. I would generally say what Barnes has done is pretty much on par with what Pearl did when you factor in all context around their situations.

I would say both have done well and both of their best teams under performed in the NCAAT. I will give Pearl made an Elite 8 but if you're honest with yourself you admit that was a pretty unexpected result considering we went into that NCAAT on a 30 point beatdown by Kentucky and we got a pretty favorable draw with the benefit of an upset.

Pearl also had two Sweet 16s to go alongside that Elite 8, which makes it a better term than Barnes'.

Regardless, my point isn't to argue Pearl over Barnes, but the idea we couldn't repeat the type of success Barnes has. I'm fine with the product of Barnes, even with the post-season frustrations. We can, though, continue on his success. He didn't make UT basketball, but he's done a good job with it.

We were Georgia before Pearl and between Pearl and Barnes. No one has ever recruited at this level at Tennessee. We would likely be Georgia again without him, unless you think we could attract a truly great coach to come here. Got any names?

Georgia is a bottom feeder. We were only bottom feeders under Houston. We were not like Georgia under Green, even if he sucked, too. We were not like Georgia under DeVoe. We were not like Georgia under Mears. Hell, even Cuonzo went to a Sweet 16.

So, no, we have rarely been like Georgia.

Ah, so this is the point where I mention someone and then you either figure out how he isn't as good as Barnes or, if he is, why we can't get him. I know this game.

As it is, though, you're still missing the point.
Absolutely not. I don't follow much basketball outside of the Vols or the tourney. I honestly don't know. So I'm asking you. Just give me the list. Why is that so hard?

Ok, I see. My point wasn't really to name names. I could come up with a list, if I had to do so. My point was rather directed to the idea we just enjoy Barnes because he is a "prettier girl than we could ever get". I don't think that's accurate and I base this on the fact what he's done here is good, but has been largely done previously. So, it certainly could in the future.

It's not like we have ever enjoyed a trip to the FF before Barnes, or a bunch of elite eights. The truth is that Tennessee has always underperformed in the ncaat, regardless of the coach, with the possible exception of Pearl, but he didn't get us to the FF either. Ernie and Bernie couldn't win an NCAAT game. So many UT teams have entered the tournament with glowing credentials over the years only to be shot down early. I'm beginnning to think it is a curse. Nothing else explains it, really. We got beat this time because we were soft in the post, same as last year.

One thing is for sure this year: The SEC sucks as a basketball conference. I was skeptical about all the propaganda about the conference being so good, and bought into the hype this year only to see the conference made a laughingstock in the past few days. 4 of our 6 teams are out, and it isn't even the end of the first weekend yet. I wouldn't be surprised if none of our teams get to the EE or even the SS. The big 10 is clearly better, and the SEC competition does not prepare us or other SEC teams for the big dance.

I don't think we have ever sent a better team to the tournament than this team, despite the soft inside presence. If this team can't get to the SS, we might as well stop hoping and being disappointed. It's baked in the cake for UT and the ncaat. Time to just enjoy our SECT and the regular season each season.

Elite 8 team was better as well as the several sweet 16 teams.

So you're not going to name 1 name? You probably know more about bball than I do so i will take your word for it. I mean, if we could definitely go get a better coach, why the heck wouldn't we???

Ok, fine. Georgia we are not and have never been. But we have always been a potential basketball powerhouse, but have never been one, unless you want to count the Pearl era and now the Barnes era. Without Barnes, we are probably LSU or Arky, at best.

Well, technically, our AD's brother has a better NCAA record the last 6 years....

But, again, I'm not saying there's better guys out there to get right now for us to get, nor did I say so, and I'm not advocating firing Barnes. However, there are guys like Musselman out there in the mid-majors. We were also a hair from hiring Bill Self back in the late 90s. There are guys out there if our AD does his work.

Eric Musselman’s are not regulars in the mid majors. Musselman was a head coach in the NBA for 2 different teams and wasn’t actually bad. Vast experience in basketball.

UF hires a guy with 3 total years of head coaching experience.

Having Rick Barnes on your sideline is the equivalent of Buzz Peterson.. You KNOW he will never win anything meaningful. So what is the point?

I vote we push him to retire. I'd rather go back to sucking and the administration continue to look for someone who can actually win when it matters then trot the biggest choker in ncaa tournament history out there every year for the guaranteed L.

Barnes sucks.

An SEC tourney win is meaningful to me.

You're not being consistent on your argument.
Either you
A) keep him because he's the best option (hence why I said you "keep the girl")
Or B) there's someone out there you're fairly confident is better and you let him go.
Unless Barnes just completely wets the bed, I see him being the best option until he retires.
Obviously my joke off the OP wasn't the perfect metaphor.

No, my argument was fine. The quote was Barnes is the "prettiest girl we could ever get". We have had girls as pretty. But, I'm not for ditching him to find one as pretty. He's about 70 and will be retiring soon, I'm sure, anyway. He'll be here as long as he wants.

So in other words, we're going to stick with this pretty girl until she leaves us, huh 😉

I hope you're really hammered because that's a really bad take.

ZZ missed 2 wide open 3s and JJJ missed wide open 3. All from the same spot and late in the game. Barnes has got to not let them shoot wide open 3s
Brilliant!! The other teams will never suspect it either, that we'll only shoot when we're not open. Until they figure it out, then they won't cover us.
