Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Honest question: is any criticism or observation of CRB’s Tourney stumbles trolling?? There are some in here piling on, but most of the posts are from people like me who REALLY wanted his drought to end and for his team to make a deep run. I’m just accepting that it likely isn’t going to happen for him and it’s a damned shame because he is a good guy and a solid coach.
Criticism is fine. Incessant criticism, never giving credit for the positive and only showing up after losses is trolling. And it’s easy to spot them.

He’s not even a UT fan
LOL
I started this thread complaining about Barnes and I'm labeled a troll.
Now I'm not complaining about the loss, I've taken up for Barnes and I'm ok with the loss... and that's a problem too.
You people are hilarious.

Won’t matter. UT under Barnes will be early out in the NCAAT. He is very good in regular season but not so good in the Big Dance. That’s just how it is with Barnes.

The people on here that don't want Barnes held accountable for losses are the same ones that defend his high salary. We knew before he got here that he was never an elite coach and was fired from his previous job for failing miserably in the NCAA tournament. The buck stops with Barnes, if he can't coach in the tournament then he owns it.

Well said

Coach knows what he needs to work on this summer and every summer. How to win games in the NCAA tournament. Where can he find that master class this summer?

What does he and his staff do every summer to improve their coaching skills?

Forget to watch the SEC Tournsment?

Let me preface what I am saying by making it clear that I do NOT want Barnes fired and I think that he is doing a good job. However, it is naïve to believe that he will be here 10 years from now, because he’s 67 currently.
When he retires, here are some realistic coaches that I think would be interested in the job and would be worth interviewing:
-Steve Forbes
-Rob Lanier
-Kim English
-Mike Schwartz
-Buzz Williams

Buzz Williams is a Texas native. He’s not leaving the state of Texas.

Steve Forbes? Really? Lol

English? Still unproven

Schwartz? Still unproven

Lanier? Still unproven

That’s a pretty underwhelming list of candidates that’s supposed to be “upgrades” from a HOF Coach.

You don't upgrade from HoF coaches as a general rule. Our next coach will either be someone on staff that gets promoted or the next hot mid-major when Rick retires.

Curious as to who you think would come here, and where did I say any of those guys were “upgrades??”

Who wouldn’t want to coach here with a fan base that fills a huge arena, that has top 10 attendance year after year, a rabid fanbase that travels, top money, fertile recruiting grounds, unlimited travel budget for recruiting and apparently plenty of money to lure recruits with NIL deals??? Yea nobody would want the Tennessee job when Barnes retires.

Fulkerson. He’ll coach until the 22nd century.

We couldn’t get any of the proven top coaches like Mark Few, Jay Wright, Cronin, etc. None of those guys are coming here because we aren’t a blue blood.

There might be a changing of the guard though. Instead of the 4/5 of Dook, UK, KU, UNC, and I’d still argue UCLA (barely) there seem to be about 5-10 more getting real close. Gonzaga has joined the party. Villanova and Michigan State hover around just outside of the club. Some were there and have fallen off (Indiana, Florida, Georgetown… even St John’s, Arkansas, Louisville, Houston, etc had a sniff). With the coaches turning over I expect to see a dozen or more instead of those same 4.

Could have hired Jay Wright years ago. But AD would not listen to Grunfeld. So you are flat wrong.
Yeah, in 2001. Times have changed. That was 2 decades ago. We would have to throw the book at Wright for him to leave Villanova. Not to mention he reportedly turned down $7.75 Mil a year from UCLA.

That’s a different conversation. Where people split up is whether Barnes gets to retire on his own terms vs the school forcing him to retire on their terms. I’m strictly of the camp that Barnes should coach here as long as we constantly in the tourney and contending for league title, recruiting stays nationally competitive, and development stays the way it is.

Make no mistake, I firmly want Barnes to be the one to decide when he is done.

We know what our ceiling likely is year in and out with Barnes. There is not a proven hire out there that would be able to keep the winning pace he has here (not including the first 2 years) while getting us to the next level. Look at the hires around the league. Florida just made a very substandard hire aka the cheap route. Our program is in a safe place with Barnes for the foreseeable future. I’ll take that anyday compared to the 4 years before he got here.

Jay Wright was not at Villanova then. He was at Hofstra. His point is valid- we aren’t hiring a high level coach at another P5 type school. Just doesn’t happen much anymore unless the coach wants out (which means he is catching heat) or has ties to the school.
