Rick Barnes: Year One

I really struggled because I understand that Barnes didn't have a lot to work with but having the worst season in nineteen years at Tennessee just really sticks in my craw.

That is not on Barnes. No big man and no true point guard on the team at all gets you a losing record. We had neither depth or starters at two of the must have positions. You can win without big men if you have excellent guards including at the point but we had neither. Absolutely zero. He needs to recruit and develop this team. Improve next year then get in the tourney in year three. This was a disaster going into the year and I had no real expectations. Beating Kentucky and Vandy which was a horrible mismatch shows he can coach. He has got to show he can spot and recruit talent for his team and style of play.

Not because of who you are to this board, however, I agree 100%. Glad the thread was initiated and I understand other viewpoints. This one was an unjustified hatchet job on CRB.

It's bad when people have to post a disclaimer before replying to me. LOL

Barnes repeatedly made comments about how fast we were going to play and how many three's we were going to take. There was even a thread about it on the forum and I expressed my doubts that would happen. And it wasn't like he's Bruce Pearl. It was more of a question of why Barnes would tell us one thing when his past clearly says otherwise, and he didn't follow through on what he told us in preseason where it seemed like he was going through a philosophy change.

And with this team, they should have really pushed the pace as fast as possible. I'm not so hung up on the three's (though I'm really curious why you talk about shooting a lot of three's then tell Hubbs and Reese not to shoot them)

If you are going to push it, then you need a couple of guys that are true point guards who can do so.

I would probably judge him off using some generic criteria. Did they compete, and give effort ?! They they execute offensively and defensively ?! Did they progress as a team and individuals ?! I'd say the jury is out until he gets a couple of classes in.

I need to defend my position a little bit more it seems.

I'm not even saying Barnes did a horrible job. He had limitations. I don't think asking for a 16-15 regular season record is too much. If we can beat teams like Kentucky, Vanderbilt, LSU, and South Carolina...why couldn't we beat teams like Auburn (especially considering the trouncing we gave them the last two games), Missouri, and TCU? In my opinion, Tennessee has improved to a standard where a losing record is not acceptable. Rick Barnes agrees.

Last year, Tyndall had a .500 record, which actually surprised me a little bit. I still gave him a C. In Cuonzo's first year he finished a lot better than predicted and won 19 games. I gave him a C+. Maybe I'm a tough grader. However, I'll never think 15-18 at Tennessee is okay and deserves a decent grade. No matter who the coach is.

Then you need to check your pride.

Rick Barnes didn't lie about the offense pushing the tempo. Unfortunately he didn't have the ponies to push the pace as much as he wanted.

Agreed. A C grade is average or what was expected.

Bruin, what frustrates me about you is that you aren't dumb, yet you make erroneous comments regulary.

Do you just like to argue?

Sometimes I think there is no way you actually believe what you're saying, but you say it anyways to shake things up.

Or maybe I'm fooled and you are, indeed, an idiot.

Damn son lmao... Not a lot of people have noticed this but Bruin is BTO's evil twin. They automatically take the opposing view on whatever the subject or agenda may be and they'll defend it until the very end (10 pages+). Both really know their basketball, which is why it makes their back and forth so frustrating.

Tyndall a C+, yet CCM who finished 2nd in the SEC after his first year here gets a C and goes to the sweet 16 in year 3 and gets a C? Damn do you give Tyndall a curve bro? Makes no sense you'd give a coach that went to the sweet 16 a better grade than a coach that didn't even make the nit.

CCM underachieved the whole regular season that year, but still ended up in the sweet 16 where almost everyone predicted we'd be. Tyndall and Barnes deserve the same grade at the very least. Barnes should get a slight curve just because of how much roster turnover there was with having 3 coaches in 3 years, plus a player quitting on the team in the middle of the year.

Martin gets a C his first year for such a poor start but I agree it easily could be a little higher grade

Martin absolutely gets a C his last year because regular season was a D- and tourney was a B+. Put them together and you get a C

Tyndall lost 8 out of his last 10 regular season games, in comparison Martin won 8 out the last 10 and was on the bubble that year. I agree he did have a poor start and if he would have beaten Austin Peay, Charleston, and Oakland he would have made the tourney. But with winning 10 games in the SEC with two of them being against a top 15 ranked UF, deserves to be ranked above what Tyndall did.

You guys know I'm a Barnes fan, but I do my best to judge these guys objectively. I think a C-range grade is appropriate. We were the inferior team most nights, but we won some good games. Obviously, we lost some bad games too. In my mind, a grade as low as a D is too little, and a B- is too much. So I give these guys a C-ish grade.

Tyndall must have had an IEP

Maybe we couldn't beat them because we (contrary to your opinion ) took too many three's when we weren't hitting any of them.
