Right Wingers Happier Than Left Wingers

Schadenfreude is real.

I have seen the poking at Christians to which you refer, and find it pointlessly antagonistic. In the same vein, I see consistent mocking and derision of LGBT folks in a high percentage of threads here. I think it makes the religious and conservative feel better about themselves as well.
Agreed.
For many in our society it isn't enough for me to win, you have to lose.

I have never been burdened by that world view. If we are recruiting the number 1 class or ranked number 1 in the nation, I doesn't enhance my life if Alabama is unranked or ranked dead last.

eta. it goes beyond and is more innate than schadenfeude.

I do disagree, just wanted to hear what the great drinka says I should be critically thinking about..

Lol, you can call me a drunk but at least I can type out a complete sentence well enough to pass for someone whose education exceeded that of the 2nd grade.

You don't think critically *about* something.

Pretty interesting conversation about why right-wingers are happier than left-wingers. The guest is the guy who wrote the book Coddling the American Mind. He has some pretty good explanations.

- liberals suffer more from anxiety and depression
- people with anxiety need CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), and the world is offering them reverse CBT. Instead of the attitude "a lot of this is in my head, and it's not as bad as it seems," it is replaced by "this is a catastrophe, and it's because the world is completely ****ed." They talked about somehow right-wingers can have so much distrust in institutions and have this same attitude that things are totally ****ed, but it seems to make them happier. I guess the explanation is it's not coupled with anxiety?
- less religiosity (which is correlated with happiness)

They talked about how quickly this happened, since liberals were so hopeful in the Obama era. They had a completely different identity and now the driving force is just shaming/scaring people into siding with them, and it's not been a winning strategy for the party or resulted in good for America.

There were plenty of other interesting points that are escaping me.

Absolute bull shi

Another really interesting observation that came out of Haidt's research was that right-wingers understand left-wingers much better than left-wingers understand right-wingers.

His theory for the reason behind this was that right-wingers, even if they live in conservative bubbles, are exposed to left-wing views via media and culture at large, while left-wingers, especially if they live in left-wing bubbles, are very rarely exposed to right-wing ideas (or are only exposed to caricatures of them).

How do you define right-winger and left-winger. I see these terms today to be more of a slur than an actual definition.

I have heard descriptions of right-wingers, for example, that would basically sum up how the average person believed and behaved in the 1980s or 1990s.

Swap out conservative and progressive.

If this board is a good representation then I'm not sure you're correct. They are exposed to the most extreme versions and then filter those thru their curated echo chambers

I'm not sure this board is a good representation of anything other than the temperature of the most passionate Vol fans at any given moment.

Yeah, when I think about right-wing or far right, I think about Nazi or Fascism, when I think about far left, I think about American Communist party. This is why we need to be careful of the terminology.

I don't think of the average poster on here fitting into either camp.

If you had to generalize, who is conservative or liberal, I would go with the following:

Liberal:

1. Celebrities/Entertainment Industry predominant (i.e. Hollywood elites and Musicians)
2. Academia
3. Welfare Recipients (poor without job or underemployed - I would say that even most welfare recipients still have some kind of job)
4. Minorities

Conservative:

1. Lower-tier Rich (they are in 1% but aren't multi-millionaires. Think the people that have property and small businesses in your town but they are not mega-wealthy) as well as high middle class
2. Evangelical Christian
3. Rural America/Farmers
4. Working Class (mostly due to Trump, they would be liberal prior)

From what I gather, the ultra rich (i.e. 100 Million or more) tend to go with both groups but lean more on the liberal side mostly due to Media/Hollywood culture

On disturbing trend is the divide is starting to take more of a split based on sex. Women tend to becoming the bulwark of the left and Men tend to be becoming the bulwark of the right.

The three biggest factors to decide what camp you would be in are probably:

1. Where you are born
2. Whether you are a boy or girl
3. Whether you believe in God and the Bible as written or not

EDIT: Now whether one group is happier than the other group is debatable. I sense that this would relate more to personal life items than political beliefs.

When a poster results in attacking the spelling or grammar on a message board post, it's an indicator.

There are many YouTube videos of liberals attending Trump rallies that come away with a totally different perspective.

Several years ago (had to have been late 2016 or 2017 or so because Trump had just gotten elected) a co-worker from NYC was visiting our office. He told a story of earlier that year, he had been in some midwestern city visiting clients and had flight trouble getting back home, so he rented a car and drove back. Over the next couple of days he had a lot of time to kill and was looking for a variety of things to listen to in the car, so he said he ended up listening to a lot of conservative talk radio. I don't know this guy to be a particularly political person, but he isn't a fan of Trump. He said on that the trip back home, while he still didn't vote for Trump, he went from "I'll never understand why people support this guy" to "I see the appeal and wasn't surprised he won the election." When he got back home, he told friends and family that Trump might win, and they just laughed at him, but after the election they were all like "How in the hell did you know that?"

Trump has been vilified in the media for the last 10 years. Every day 24/7. After a while people take it as gospel. It's a form of brainwashing. It's on full display right here.

If the media has brainwashed people on Trump, think about what other topics they have brainwashed on.

Their are some sacred cows that 95% or more Americans believe are true that are questionable if you deep dive into the topic.

Hell, I think it goes further than that. For many folks today, it seems to be "I don't care if I don't win; as long as you lose."

The liberal left side of me is happy just like the right wing side. The left section sags like a lazy bum while the right section is more uptight. The center is a giant cluster f*&^.
