I'd like the Miami DC that got fired for DBs and Michigan's WRs coach.

Exactly right, HV, if Adkins go do you like the Michigan o-line. Seems to be a staple of that team year after year. I also wouldn't mind Karl Dorrel taking Troops job.

Well... looks like that rumor I heard may have had some merit. And as I said, it appears that Spence is the "safe pick" right now that Fulmer would probably relate to more than some coach that has been baptised in the spread.

What kind of offense is Clem"p"son running. I read "balanced attacK" and I immediately think pro-style that may do okay against most ACC teams but cannot succeed against the speed of elite SEC defenses (as we know all to well at this point). Coach Spence has a nice resume and appears to have had success on various levels. Let the peeling of the onion commence.

WVLT learned Thursday evening that Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence will be in Knoxville Friday to interview for the Vols offensive coordinator opening.
Spence has been the Tigers offensive coordinator for 3 years. He is known for coming up with unique and different formations and plays. Spence has been with Clemson for 3 years after making the move from Toledo in 2005.

Clemson will hold its final practice for their Peach Bowl matchup with Auburn Friday morning, then Spence will make the flight over to visit with Phillip Fulmer.
The Vols offensive coordinator job came open last week when David Cutcliffe announced that he was leaving Tennessee and taking over as the head coach at Duke.
Tennessee wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor announced Wednesday that he is leaving Tennessee and taking over the co-offensive coordinator job at Oklahoma State. Taylor said the move was necessary after he got the feeling that he would not be considered for the Vols offensive coordinator job.
Spence will arrive in Knoxville Friday afternoon. There is no word on when he will return to South Carolina.

Apparently, Brent Hubbs said that, surprisingly to him, alot of people from the NFL are high on Spence. He didn't expect him to be this highly regarded. Then again, it is just the first interview and CPF has said he has had a ton of interest in the job already.
hv, this may or may not be the best thread to initiate this discussion but I figure it is going to come into play at some point during the course of the search for a new OC. To what extent does UTK's ability to recruit nationwide depend on keeping the pro-style offense?

A quick survey of two Clemson boards quickly reveals that many posters want Spence to leave so they can elevate Dabo Swinney to the job, he's their white version of Trooper Taylor I think.

I don't know a lot about Spence but from what I've read so far I don't find myself getting excited about the thought of him being our next OC.

Here is the skinny, if you guys haven't looked him up already. The Clemson offense would definitely fall into the broad category of the spread.
Player Bio: Rob Spence :: Football

Rob Spence has brought the Tiger offense to among the elite units in the nation. And he has done it with success in all areas of the game. In 2006, his second year as offensive coordinator, Clemson gained at least 2,500 yards rushing and passing, one of just four schools nationally to exceed those mark. It was also just the second time in school history it had been done.
As a result of this balance, Clemson had its second consecutive eight-win season in 2006, something the program had not done in consecutive years since 1990,91. Clemson led the ACC and was in the top 13 in the nation in total offense, rushing offense, and scoring offense. It marked just the third time in history that the Tiger offense finished in the top 20 in all three areas in the same year.
Leading the ACC in those three areas is not a common occurrence. In fact, it was the first time any ACC team had led in all three areas since 1990, and it was just the second time it had been done by any ACC school in the last 25 years. It was also the first time Clemson had done it since 1978. The Tigers were a dominant team on offense at the league level in 2006. Clemson averaged a league-best 410 yards per game of total offense to finish 13th in the nation, the only ACC team to finish in the top 49 in the country in that category. Clemson gained 719 more yards and scored 80 more points than its nearest ACC foe in 2006. It was quite an accomplishment considering the ACC had five of the top 18 teams in the nation in total defense.

I know that it's only an interview, but this really gets to me. I had my hopes up......I really, really believed that Phil was going to make a big splash with this hire. You would think that I had learned after 37 years to never get my hopes up when it concerns Tennessee football. Who knows, this guy Spence might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, the stats seems ok, but how much of that is CJ Spiller? And what kind of recruiter is he? did he have anything to do with getting Korn?

I am not blown away by Spence. However, the fact that Fulmer is interviewing someone recognized as a "specialist" in a completely different offensive scheme is a win in my book. Even the interview seems to be one of the first steps toward coaching sobriety Rex. He recognizes he has a problem.

Lex, I will concede that the fact Phil has managed to bring someone in that has not actually worked on the Hill is encouraging. I just want some buzz, some excitement, something to make the recruits nationwide take notice.

The reason Fulmer can relate to him is because he is known here in South Carolina as Rob "Bubble Screen" Spence.
He is NOT what we need at Tennessee.
I do agree we need fresh blood in here but it is not this guy.
