Rob Spence of Clemson (Merged)

I can tell you living here near Clemson that Clemson fans are divided on Spence, similar to the UT division on Fulmer. This a.m. the phone lines on the local sports radio were buzzing about Spence. Most of the Clemson fans I know are ready to see Spence leave and the call-in show this a.m. produced numerous volunteers to help him pack up.

Maybe we can add purple to our uniforms and place a dog paw logo on the sides of our helmets.

By the way, what happened to Duke's OC and why aren't we going after him. Surely he would be willing to come.

help me lex, what kind of scheme does Spence specialize in?

He has been branded (by the Sporting News anyway) as a specialist in the spread offense. Some seem to be giving him a ton of credit for his work in Toledo.

Please don't misunderstand my intentions. In a perfect world we would be hiring an entirely brand new staff. Period. At least I am not hearing Adkins...Adkins...Adkins right now. That is a positive in my book.

I expect there will be more interviews, maybe many more.... this looks to be a real feeling out process now. Not having an answer right under his nose is new territory for the old O lineman. He'll think this one through. Going to take a little while though.

Lex, you're are spot on, at least we can feel pretty good that it wont be Adkins.

I agree. That is really my point. At the very least bring a few of these spread guys in, talk to them, and see what their vision for our offense is with the talent currently in place.

I cannot shake the idea that things are going to be different this time around. It is just a gut feeling. If it all turns out to be a ruse, shame on me. Until then I will appreciate the finer points of the process.

I hope Phil's for real on this....if he ends up promoting Adkins, I will freakin' meltdown.

So far I've been intrigued by the way Fulmer has handled this search. His latest comments however about this being a good time to interview, etc, due to the dead period in recruiting - makes me think we'll have a new staff in place much sooner than later.

My hope is that he will indeed bring in some "new blood", not sure if this guy is the answer or not, but the fact we're interviewing outside of the UT family tree, and at least exploring new possibilities is very encouraging.

I know that it's only an interview, but this really gets to me. I had my hopes up......I really, really believed that Phil was going to make a big splash with this hire. You would think that I had learned after 37 years to never get my hopes up when it concerns Tennessee football. Who knows, this guy Spence might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, the stats seems ok, but how much of that is CJ Spiller? And what kind of recruiter is he? did he have anything to do with getting Korn?
Davis had more rush yards than Spiller this season.

I'm also more interested to see how many of Clemson's best this guy has recruited. Davis, Spiller, Ford, Ricky Sapp, these guys could start at any SEC school IMO.

The reason Fulmer can relate to him is because he is known here in South Carolina as Rob "Bubble Screen" Spence.
He is NOT what we need at Tennessee.
I do agree we need fresh blood in here but it is not this guy.

Hey, I'm not arguing for or against the guy. But just be aware that more than likely, we are not going to get the next Tony Franklin (Troy St) or Rich Rodriquez. We have to remember this is Fulmer, and he doesn't move far from his comfort zone.

Coming from a fanbase that refuses to loosen its death grip on Tommy Bowden....

I've never been impressed with Tommy Bowden. His current job at Clemson was in part aided by his offensive coordinator when he was at Tulane.

I hope he does move sooner rather than later. Im hoping that a splash will aloow us to recover in recruiting. Right now, we're hurting and UF, Bama, UGA are rolling.

Even if Fulmer speeds up the hiring process, I'm not sure it will translate in recruiting at this late stage. However, that also will depend on who the hire is.

I guess I'm more optomistic that we get the right fit, and the offense can speak for itself next year. Recruits are drawn first and foremost to the level of play they see. An explosive offense will be the biggest recruiting tool.

Blasted! I'm just going to repeat my opinion on this subject as much as possible. I would take Spence over Kippy Brown any day of the week. I'd take Marrone over Spence and I'd take Hatcher, Crowton or Calvin Magee over Marrone.

Crowton is a scourge to the programs he is involved with. He promises great things and leaves behind him a wake of destruction. He has ruined every team other team I like (I go to BYU, and used to live in Oregon), I will not let him ruin my Vols.
