Roster reset and overview

BJ Edwards in my opinion will hit the portal which means most likely JJJ returns and J. Phillips probably remains in the draft. I just don't see any minutes for Edwards.

If this goes like your other predictions, this means: Edwards stays and becomes a star, JJJ doesn't return, abs Phillips doesn't stay in the draft

Zeigler 30/Dilione 10
Santi 20/Dilione 10/Edwards 10
Mashack 15/Gainey 15/Santi 10
Ledlum 20/Mashack 10/Jefferson 10
Aidoo 22/Awaka 18

Bench: Carr, Cade, Estrella

Zeigler 30
Santi 30
Mashack 25
Aidoo 22
Freddie 20
Ledlum 20
Awaka 18
Gainey 15
Jefferson 10
Edwards 10
I'm assuming the only redshirt candidate out of the "Bench" of Carr, Cade, and Estrella would be Cade Phillips right?

So you think all 3 incoming freshmen will redshirt now? I find it hard to believe Estrella isn’t going to break into the rotation. He’s a huge talent.

Yes I think so. Carr might be the best shooter on the team and that's saying something with Santi coming back. Then Estrella will be needed down low and I see him getting minutes similar to what Awaka got this year (10 mpg.)

Embrace small ball…
Zeigler/Edwards
Santi/Carr
Freddie/Gainey
Ledlum/Mashack/Jefferson/Cade
Aidoo/Awaka/Estrella
I'm glad we didn't bring in a big for this reason. Unless Estrella is just ready to go day one, we'll have to go small and split the minutes between Aidoo and Awaka. If Freddie is a solid contributor, we should be just as good as last year at least.

I'm excited to see what Mashack can do with free run and a summer to know it's coming. I think he has shades of JRich in ways.

I hope Estrella surprises and earns minutes. We need a stretch five type threat. Not saying he is a legitimate outside scorer but he can hit the three. Something Uros couldnt do. Need the opposing bigs pulled out of the lane.
Aidoo can hit 3’s in practice and warm ups - maybe he will bring that skill to the games this year and be our next Chism?

Sorry, I was just confused. Your minutes breakdown had Estrella with 0 minutes so I thought you were implying that he wouldn’t play at all.
Just bench guys, I’m not breaking it down to 2-3mpg guys, was just listing double digit minute guys and I don’t think any of the true freshman will be that.

Agree completely, he makes the same year 2-3 jump as 1-2 and he’s a 8-10ppg guy.
If he improves 3 point shooting and free throws I think he could exceed that and be 12ppg fairly easily. Was pretty good down the stretch after being thrown in the fire and left a bunch of points at the line.

I think it could be tough to find minutes for everyone in OOC, even with ZZ out. Taking a stab:

Santi - 25
Mashack - 25
Dilione - 25
Ledlum - 25
Aidoo - 20
Awaka - 20
Estrella - 20
Edwards - 10
Gainey - 10
Carr - 8
Jefferson - 7
Phillips - 5

I feel like we're going to have to give several guys decent minutes at point to figure out the contingency plan/backup situation, so Edwards and Gainey may need more time than this. We need to find at least one reliable 3-point option from among the freshman/redshirt/transfer additions. There really isn't a lot of carryover from last year's team, even with Vescovi back.

Santi's minutes obviously bump up in SEC play to typical 35ish. Hopefully one of the posts separates and claims a larger share. And then ZZ can hopefully be good for at least 25? Other wing minutes consolidate to whoever can spot up from 3 and/or attack the rim and finish/get to the line.

That’s a good start. Rather than minutes, I’m focused on PPG. As I see it, we need to have a team target of scoring 80 PPG every time out. Yep, that is surely a stretch target for us. But the higher you reach, the higher you go. Coming out of last season, if I can be an oracle of the obvious, we need scorers on the floor at all times. We still need pure shooters who can play serviceable defense…guys who we can depend on for double-figure scoring every time out. With a rotation of 8, it’s possible. In my estimation, we still need to add/find 15-20 PPG to our roster…assuming JJJ, Phillips, and Plavsic are gone. But we’re three over the limit right now so it doesn’t look like we have any more room. Somebody feel free to educate me…can we add any others to our roster or are we done?

No team that averaged 80+ppg last year even made the Final Four…

They should be playing “small”, one of Aidoo & Awaka on the court, more than half the time imo.

Yes, they are set up to play small, but they better give Estrella, and to some degree Phillips, some play time early to see if we have a 3rd C/PF option if needed against teams with big front lines. Of course things change quite a bit should Phillips return.

Hoping so. If he can hit the top of the key 3 at a decent clip, that would open the lane a ton. The C often ends up at that spot in a lot of our sets it seems.
