Catching back up on this thread. This may be discussed by the time I catch up fully, but the addition of Gainey, Knecht, and Dillone is going to help us in so many ways. All of these guys are at least as capable, some more so, of playing point in a pinch as Mashack. Even though we didn’t land a pure PG in the portal, we are far more flush with capable ball handlers than we were last year. I’m really loving the shape this team is taking. His game certainly looks more like a shooting guard. He, like all guards, can play PG for emergency minutes, but it puts him on the ball and takes away his strength. Kinda like Santi.
Mashack quite literally play some 4 for us last year, you get your best players on the court and having Dilione on the bench and Cade Phillips on the court is definitely not that.Mashack is not a 4 and your backups has 4 guys 6’4” or less, superrrrr small ball. Basically two totally different styles.
I’ll go:
1 ZZ/Mashack
2 Santi/Gainey
3 Ledlum/Knecht
4 Awaka/Phillips
5 Aidoo/Estrella
Bench: Jefferson (3)/BJ(1)/Dilione(1/2)/Carr(2)
Assuming ZZ ready to go at opener.
I think Estrella is a good kid with a good circle around him, if he’s not playing I think they’ll understand why and what needs work.Do you think Estrella would be okay with not being in rotation, just inquiring these young men these days want to play redshirting is like slapping them it seems anymore
Couple things there…we only have 2 proven and trusted bigs, and we know how important trust is to Barnes, I don’t see him starting both together and risking foul trouble and then being handcuffed in games. Also, Awaka struggled greatly with guarding opposing 4’s last year, while his quickness hopefully improves it’s still likely a weakness. The offense needs spacing and the way we’ve recruited this offseason tells me the staff wants to play smaller and with more spacing, that lends itself to Awaka being much more of a 5 than a 4. I see Barnes playing Aidoo and Awaka there and each getting 20+mpg, which is a good number for a big in our high intensity system. That’s fair. Then by that logic, how do you have awaka on the bench? I’m expecting a lot more from him next year.
I think yall are seriously underestimating Mashack. He is tremendous on defense and looked more and more comfortable with the ball in his hands as the season moved along. Another offseason of improvement and he is likely one of the two or three best players on this team.
Ideally. It will be good to see how they do against top competition before we go counting our chickens though. With Knecht and Ledlum on board, this team gives me vibes of the Grant and Admiral teams. What I mean by that is this should be a team that actually has some offensive fire power, that Barnes will need to make a good defensive team. Between Knecht, Ledlum, Santi, Dilione, and ZZ when he gets back, we have enough people that can put the ball in the basket. We still have plenty of good defenders as well like Aidoo, Mashack, ZZ, Santi, and hopefully Jefferson or Carr can round out the wing rotation.
I still worry about the PF position. I don't expect Cade to play a ton this year, so to me that really only leaves Ledlum as a legitimate option there. Awaka can play there, but he's more of a 5 in college. Knecht is pretty skinny, but has the height. Mashack is as tough as nails, but does not have the height.
I’m honestly not trying to be argumentative and maybe I should’ve just ignored this post, but hopefully you read it for what it is and not assuming I’m just disagreeing because it’s you…Wouldn’t be surprised to see 6-7 guys average double digits in scoring next year

That seems like wildly unrealistic expectations, Gonzaga who was the best offenses in CBB had 4 double digit scorers. Our best offensive team under Barnes which was the Admiral senior team had 5 double digit scorers, and 2 of those just barely hit that mark and that was a team playing a 6 man rotation.
I don’t see this team playing a 6 man rotation, and I highly doubt we are going to be the #1 offensive efficiency team in the country, getting to 6-7 double digit scorers likely means we are arguably one of the most efficient offenses to ever hit the college ranks, and I don’t see that happening.
