Roster reset and overview

I think the elite level of defense we play will always limit us from throwing up 80 ppg simply by holding opponents to later in their shot clock before even running their scheme. And that obviously limits the amount of minutes we would have in the entire game to run our offense. But for me I'll take that swap off. I LOVE to watch elite defense play in any sport especially basketball.

Feels like BJ is going be the odd man out unless Gainey walks on. Hate that for a local kid, but that’s the nature of the business sometimes.

Haven’t you declared that neither Edwards nor Gainey will give up their scholarships?

Kind of wild that we finally have a roster that we are worried who could be the odd man out and not three or four players that we dont care leave or not.

Actually we only have 3 guys confirmed via Twitter to Thunder oil so we’ve got a long way to go

My best guess as a 2 deep and 10 man rotation…

Zeigler/Dilione
Santi/Carr
Knecht/Gainey
Ledlum/Mashack
Aidoo/Awaka

Bench: Edwards, DJ, Estrella & Phillips
I know Knecht said UT has talked to him as a 2/3, but he’s got two inches on Jahmai. I wonder if he’d be better suited for that small ball 4 role than would Shack

I was a bit surprised to see Santi return without either JJJ or Uros returning as they are such close friends.

With that said, I like this new roster and confident summer workouts and the month if Dec will give this team time to gel. Im excited about next yr’s roster and proud of Barnes and team for their successful recruiting in the portal.

He’s known to struggle defensively and he’s much leaner than Mashack, maybe we see it against really small teams but I think for the most part Mashack would get the nod over him.

Well with Knecht officially in the boat, it’s looking like we’ll be a preseason Top 10 team.

I think we take a step back defensively but the offense will be much improved.

I don't think there is any roster in the nation you'd take over ours other than maybe like UK or UConn and I doubt that

Just purely on raw talent, anyone with a functioning brain would take UK's roster over ours. Factor in intangibles like experience, age, etc., and maybe it tightens up.

I’ll be interested to see how Kentucky looks if they get Dickinson. Obviously an excellent player, but he seems self absorbed. Wonder how he will blend in with a group of ultra talented freshmen. Seems like that could be make for an interesting, potentially toxic, locker room.

My best guess as a 2 deep and 10 man rotation…

Zeigler/Dilione
Santi/Carr
Knecht/Gainey
Ledlum/Mashack
Aidoo/Awaka

Bench: Edwards, DJ, Estrella & Phillips
Mashack is not a 4 and your backups has 4 guys 6’4” or less, superrrrr small ball. Basically two totally different styles.

I’ll go:

1 ZZ/Mashack
2 Santi/Gainey
3 Ledlum/Knecht
4 Awaka/Phillips
5 Aidoo/Estrella

Bench: Jefferson (3)/BJ(1)/Dilione(1/2)/Carr(2)

Assuming ZZ ready to go at opener.

To me it seems like the top 7 in the rotation are obvious: (all experienced or known quantities)
Starters:
Aidoo
Ledlum
Knecht
Vescovi
Zeigler (assuming he is ready)

Other known quantities: Awaka who can play 4 & 5 and Mashack who can play 1, 2 and 3.

If Barnes only goes with a 9 man rotation it gets tight. Assuming he surprises us, pushes tempo more and goes with a 10 man rotation, without knowing much about the remaining guys, based on balance between the frontcourt/backcourt I would guess Estrella, Gainey and Dilione get the nod.

Barnes likes big guys and if Estrella can adjust to college game, he gives us needed size, shot blocking, rebounding and potentially a stretch 5. Gainey has college experience and is a pure shooter. Dilione is a combo who can spell at PG most importantly, but can play the other 2 wing positions as well. Surprises always occur. No one would have thought Awaka would have played this year. Can’t wait to hear the rumors leak out on all the new guys once they get on campus. Bottom line, we are going to be good regardless, assuming ZZ who is not just our PG, but the heart of this team is ready to go.

So are ledlum and gainey. Doesn’t mean they will.

Though I could easily be convinced of Knecht over ledlum. Reason I put ledlum is barnes favors def and cupboard pretty bare from scoring perspective with my second rotation if Knecht is starting.

ZZ / Freddie
Santi / Gainey
Knecht / Mashack
Mashack / Ledlum
Aidoo / Awaka

Perhaps Ledlum starts over Mashack at the 4, but Mashack will still get plenty of minutes off the bench at the 3 and the 4 spot.
