Rum Enthusiasts...?

I've seen Pyrat on the shelves and pondered buying some but haven't heard many reviews on it.
I think someone recommended Sailor Jerry to me a while back, not sure if I tried it though.

The Pyrat stuff is super smooth. Drank it all on the rocks. TrUT started this thread about it. Will buy another bottle. Supposedly it mixes very well too.

Have been on a rum quest - here's what I've found:

1. Many rave about Prichards. I found it tastes almost like bourbon which while not a bad thing doesn't match what I'm looking for in a rum.

2. The Ron Zacapa is good but again but not great. It is a distinct style; more like a sherry.

3. Mount Gay XO is quite nice.

4. My second bottle of Pyrat is very citrus flavored - not sure if it's the bottle or the profile of this rum. Since it is a sourced blend it could be that the flavor profile varies from vintage to vintage. Not anywhere close to my original bottle and impression.

5. El Dorado 12 year old is very nice - good rum flavor but the barrel charcoal is noticeable

6. Zaya is delicious with a pronounced vanilla flavor. May be a bit sweet for some but very rum profile.

7. Mount Gay Black Barrel is my go to mixing rum. High quality at a good price. Can be sipped straight too.

8. Ron Anejo Pampero Aniversario - nice sipper with a bit of chocolate flavor.

With the exception of #7, all of the above are either sipped on the rocks or with a splash of ginger ale. #7 I generally mix.

9. Kraken - okay if you like spiced rum but tastes artificial to me. Definitely needs to be mixed.

10. Bacardi Oakheart - decent enough sipper and commonly available at bars. Have done on the rocks and works well enough.

11. Sailor Jim - did on the rocks at a bar and was not impressed enough to choose over Barcardi Oakheart

Pretty good effort. I'm not a rum enthusiast. I've never had a Bacardi that I liked. Sailor Jim is terrible. I do like Pritchard's though.

So the new additions and brief reviews:

1. Ron Mathusalem 18 yo - this is my new favorite. It has it all, great rum flavor. Straight or mixed it is superb and reasonably priced.

2. Papa'sPilar (dark) - wow this is some crazy stuff. Solera method 24 yo. Tons of flavors. Definitely for sipping. Hit or miss for me. It's high quality but intense in flavors.

3. Ron Centenario 20 yo - good quality at an affordable price. This is a good rum; non offensive but nothing to set it apart from other good ones.

4. Ron Abuelo 7 yo - maybe the best value in rum. 7 yo is not that impressive but this stuff is super smooth and has all the rum taste you'd look for. My new mixer of choice.

5. Brugal Especial Extra Dry - to quote a Monty Python bit: this is not a rum for drinking; it is a rum for laying down and running away. All alcohol burn and little rum taste. Stick with regular Bacardi is you want a white rum.

6. Appleton Estate Extra 12 yo - good but nondescript. You won't go wrong with it but it doesn't stand out to me.

I keep about 14 or so now in the collection. I couple I'd drop in favor of some I haven't tried yet.

I was on a White Cuban kick for a while. Like a White Russian but with rum instead of vodka. When I make them frozen in the Magic Bullet it's like a Frosty. Delicious but dangerous. Add some coconut rum and/or coconut milk and you have a facsimile of a Bushwacker.

A year later and I'm more a rummy than ever. Great sipping drink. Just got a giant ice cube tray so a couple fingers of a 15 year old El Dorado and a giant cube is a really nice thing.

Have about 20 aged rums in the collection.

I tried some dark rum a few weeks back. I wasn't a fan. It was almost syrupy. Really thick and sweet.

I'll stick to bourbon

Visted the Appleton place a few months back. Really neat place. Still like some other rums better, but as far as basic rum goes, a lot of their stuff is just fine.

Had some of the Kirk and Sweeney last night. Not my favorite; has a hint of licorice/anise flavor.

This is my favorite all arounder

Wasn't a big fan of the Ron Zacapa 23 at first but now it's in the top group. Still like the Zaya though it can be a bit sweet.

The Ron Abelo 7 yo is a great deal in rum.

The other contender to the Ron Matusalem 18. El Dorado 12 yo (I prefer it to the 15 yo but both are really good)

If you try Barbancourt, go all out for the B. Estate Reserve.

The Rhum style has a different character than Rum (can't remember the difference now).

I have some Barbancourt but it's a step down from that. Will have to find the B. Estate Reserve.

Rhum is what got me started actually. Bought a bottle of La Favorite Rhum Agricole Ambere. Hard to find but was good stuff for mixing.

Enjoying a Black Cuban - not sure if that's the right term but it's rum on the rocks with a splash of Kaluha. Tonight it's Don Q Gran Anejo (Puerto Rico). Sips like a Cognac.

I haven't bought any Rum in years, when I did buy some,it was Meyers Dark Rum ,years ago I was surprised at how cheap Rum was in the Caribbean,a bottle of Bacardi was about the same price as a can of Coke, the coke was a buck 50,if my poor old memory serves rightly

that was years ago :)

My wife found a recipe for Tropical Cold Butter Rum. Where in Knoxville can I find the following ingredients:

Rhum Agricole (Agricole is a type?)
Black Strap Rum (still looking)
Ticaloid 210 s (stabilizer)

Thanks for any help.

GBO!

Edited: did a little more research. The ticaloid 210s is different mixed gums that I believe come in powder form. IAW the recipe, it is used as a stabilizer...beats me.
