"Guys, Pearl ain't all that, we were relevant in the mid '70s."

yeah, and our football program was relevant in the 90s. .. doesn't seem to do much for us now though does it?

we'll spend the next 5 years lamenting over loss after loss in football and basketball... yearning for the days of yesteryear.

This isn't the Ernie and Bernie show. This is 2010 and Bruce is just the ticket this program needed, and still needs. He filled the stands and w/ this recruiting class will continue to get credit for it even if he's gone. Our games will all be televised, save one. Remember that happening under the tenures of anyone in past decades? This, if true, is a major setback and not one that will likely land us in the same position in years to come. Even if we land a good coach, the enthusiasm that Bruce ignited in this program will likely be diminished by his parting.

And in the late 90's
And in a period from the mid 60's-early 80's
And in the 40's and 50's
And in the 30's

We've been relevant for more periods than just from 2005-2010.

I guess to say we have been irrelevant was wrong. But IMO we have never been more relevant. JMO though.

Does it matter if Pearl had one of the better runs we've had? With what's going down, he's going to set this program back a good bit, and it's all his fault.

Nicely said.

Were we looking at potential probation during those periods? 'Cause as many people have said, if you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin

Come on, didn't you see him cry at the press conference? All will be fine.

Under Jerry Green this program had no identity and would routinely get beat by less talented teams. Take the 2001 season for instance. When we hit the SEC schedule we started out 4-7 and got swept by a terrible Georgia team and when we barely scraped in the NCAA tourney, we got trounced by a UNC-Asheville team in the first round.

Of course it will. That does tend to happen when a coach leaves.

If Tennessee finds a coach that's good, and can win, it doesn't really matter if he spits lyrics on stage, or paints his chest, Vol fans will flock to games.

I agree with all this. I'm mocking all our dumb fans who think we were somehow equally relevant when Jerry Green was here.

Why? He won 2 East Titles (when UK was significantly better than the UK teams Pearl has competed against besides this past year) and made 4 straight trips to the 'AAs. That's what everybody uses as evidence that Pearl's the greatest coach on the planet.

Oh, c'mon. You know I'm well aware of the past of UT basketball and its existence pre-Pearl, but you can't be comparing Green and Pearl with a straight face. I imagine you are playing devil's advocate. Still, Pearl coaches circles around Green, who had his team on autopilot.

Just for argument's sake, remember that Green lived off O'Neill's recruits and still only manged to find that one acorn of a Sweet 16 in 2000. That's quite a bit different than 3 Sweet 16's in 5 years or a 2-4 NCAA record vs. an 8-5 record.

Yes, that year was eerily similar to Pearl's 3rd year. Remember getting run out of the gym by Auburn and Ole Miss? Remember in 2000 when Green beat the defending National Champion, UCONN, to make it into the Sweet 16?

If anyone says this is not the best we've been in basketball in school history you are ig-nant

Dont start running the numbers, you will ruin this argument.

No he isn't. I wish people would stop saying that.

No coach is bigger than the program than he coaches for, with a few exceptions.

And no, Bruce isn't one of them. We've had success in basketball before Bruce, and we'll have it afterwards. We just need to find the right guy.

we have had success in basketball before BP ? Really, when 30 years ago ? or you talking about the days of Mears ?

Give the Pearlster a break. Lofton had a hurt ankle. The same Lofton who came here before Tennessee basketball relevant, remember?

Pearl is the best BB coach we have ever had period. Trying to say otherwise is like arguing Obama is the best president we have ever had.
