RUMOR: Texas Stays In The Big XII

i have a hard time imagining that a big 12 minus nebraska would make so much money that they could afford to give them that much more. unless ESPN has really been holding out on them the last few years.

This.

Plus, ESPN has a contract set to expire with the PAC10 (also small) and doesn't want the PAC10 to create a future PAC10 Network, something they would probably do if they had added their 4 targeted schools.

The BIG12 is using the threat of dissolvement to leverage a better deal out of ESPN well before their contract of $6.5 million/team (peanuts) expires in 2016. The ACC re-upped from $5.8 million to $13 million/school when their contract expired. Like the SEC, I'm sure they proposed an ACC Network to drive their price point up. But, unlike the BIG12, the ACC didn't have the bargaining power of two conferences behind them. ESPN would have also missed out on the money they had projected to make off the remaining BIG12 contract.

I hope this doesn't lead conferences down a slippery slope. It's unlikely to happen, but the SEC could threaten to disband five years from now in an attempt to black ball ESPN, so long as ESPN takes them seriously. Afterall, the $17 million we're getting today won't be worth as much in 10 years. And "perceptions" will change when the ACC inks a more lucrative deal with ESPN in 2023 - a few years before the SEC one ups them with an even more profitable one of their own. Of course, we have the CBS deal, which will be renegotiated before either of those two contracts. FWIW, the contract from the BIG10 Network has a huge 25 year term.

(edit: On second thought, $17 million/school is the average - the true annual payouts are probably progressive)

The Big 12 is staying together surprisingly, the TV deal is from Fox Sports for $20 million.

Apparently the "Big 12" will be 10 teams for the foreseeable future.

Just give them the Big 10 name and let the Big 10 have the Big 12 name.

Or, pending we don't go, call it the texas and its chumps conference.

That's why I was so shocked you tee'd that one up. Ps, next time you're in town, hit me up. I'll buy the first round. Not joking.

Per school?

That's interesting. Their FOX deal expires next year, but they'll still be under contract with ESPN through 2016 - no? Did they buy up some of the ESPN rights?

As long as OU is winning the conference title 6 of every 10 years, I seriously doubt they are concerned with the perception that Texas is calling the shots.

I get that, but as an ou fan, you've gotta be a little disappointed that the folks in austin were the key to this whole deal.

Besides, is ou ranked in the top 25 every year because they hang the speed limit on baylor? They're tied. I just wish someone in the south had the stones to say enough is enough with texas and their self perceived authority.

Not really. Why would I be upset that a TV driven decision would be most influenced by the flagship program in a state as populous as Texas?

I guess my thoughts were that austin comes out as the father figure, regardless of results on the field. That does not set will with me and we done have half the winning percentage that ou does against them.

As long as OU keeps collecting the hardware, I don't care if Texas thinks they're running things.

The 11th hour plan saved this conference from the brink of collapse. I wonder what's next? Kinda reminds how baseball avoided another strike several years ago. I wonder if the 11th hour will save the '11-'12 NFL season?

I don't think we have seen the end of this. Tejas U's greed will eventually tick off the rest of the leagues members and they will let them know where they can stick it. Heck, A&M, God Bless Them, came darn close to doing so. For cajones reasons alone, I would welcome the Aggies to the SEC when it finally comes to it.

So does the Big 12 add two and remain the big 12? Is the Big 10 the new Big 12? Will the Pac 10 add a championship game? Inquiring minds want to know.
