I'm sure a lotta you heard (and probably don't care) but people in Kentucky getting excited over possibility of renovated Rupp Arena.

Lexington still pursuing Rupp Arena renovation

Thoughts? Lets try to be serious here. I'm just interested to see some opposing views. I would guess some have been there for games and the such.

Thanks.

Why not just build a new arena like Auburn did last year?

1) You do not tear down Rupp Arena, The Dean Dome, Phog Allen Fieldhouse, etc. To think so is blasphemy.

2) The feasibility study was conducted and a new arena would basically double the cost of renovating Rupp. Keeping the best of both worlds would be to renovate the legendary building.

What will they benefit from it? Whats wrong with it as is?

Although the talks have been in motion several years, Louisville building their state of the art arena really pressed the issue. Most people think that the focal point of doing this renovation is luxury boxes, which in the report there will be very few added. Renovating the locker rooms are a big priority, and additional seats will be added, not subtracted. All bleachers in the upper section will be replaced by chair seats, and new scoreboards and huge instant replay screens will be added. Basically emulating most modern NBA arena's while trying to keep the college atmosphere of Rupp as it is now.

I don't think Louisville built their new arena for just the university. That city is still in the hopes of potentially luring an NBA team in the future (doubtful) and the city needed a new arena for hosting events. Maybe I'm wrong. I do remember how they actively pursued the Grizzlies before they moved to Memphis.

There really isnt anything wrong with it, but its like 30 years old. I've been predicting this for a few years.

Also,

There is a lot of talk about how to pay for that and that is why Rupp isnt being torn down. The university doesnt want to ask for state funding.

Personally, I think we should have a new Rupp but I would be sad to see the naming rights sold to a dumb company.

Thanks for comments guys.

Why do you care what Louisville does?

Lex feels the need to convince themselves that they are just as big as Louisville, when in reality they are 3 times smaller. It is about the conference business....and envy.

You have helped answer your own question. Those are all professional sports facilities, built for profit, maintained by profit.

Historic college venues are built on tradition, years of it.

Before anyone tries the weak argument that college athletics is all about money, yes it is NOW. However, it was not always that way, when the great venues were established.

It is simply about Big Brother vs Little Brother, and pure unbridled hatred for each others program and the unwillingness to lose to each other in any form of competition.

The old Orange Bowl and The Sugar Bowl stadiums have been demolished as well!

Well, hard to understand for UT fans.

I agree. So I guess we should replace the statue of Liberty since it is so old?

It's not hard to understand. It'd be like replacing Neyland.

If she needed to be, yes. Luckily for us, she doesn't
