Rush Limbaugh has passed

Yes RL was crass and over the top at times with personal attacks. The core of his impact was to provide different perspectives on multi-faceted issues from what the main party line was.

Seems most of the haters focus on the first part in their critique while ignoring the second part which was really the source of his popularity.

I listened some in the 90s but was pretty ambivalent sense then. He has his sins and his positive contribution.

What I see in the negative reaction that is most troubling is intolerance for someone having a different take on things. The negative reaction is almost exclusively from people with different policy views than those promoted by RL but it gets labeled as "hate speech" - it comes across as a hostility to different views.

again you have reading comprehension issues, it's not that either...the years were in order, they weren't even in the top 30 all time and they will be knocked off the list completely next year
Being a top annual tour is not what I would consider niche.

Question for you.
Were you aware of Rush and his exposure of Bill Clinton's fake-ness. If so, what were your thoughts (assuming Clinton was your man back then)?
I hated Rush Limbaugh back then. Never listen to him since. I see him as Sean H of Rachel M. Playing to an audience. He did change the way talk radio was viewed and should be respected for that. He literally set the standard for how to do y’all radio.

Was your hate due to his style? His effectiveness? A mix? Other things?

I thought he was FOS and condescending to anyone with a different opinion. Hate is probably too strong a word. I never disliked him the way I do Nancy P or Mitch Mc

Edit: I also thought he was misleading. His effectiveness was a scary sign for the future. The half truth hate the opposition that the Democrats have mastered definitely started with Rush. Or at least became SOP

His biggest drawbacks were:

1) He had a way of driving away people who agreed with him, or who otherwise might be inclined to agree with him (via his style and the rhetoric he used)
2) Because he was such a bomb-thrower, he allowed the left to caricature conservative opposition to progressive policies by playing a soundbite from his show. Best example, the Sandra Fluke deal we already talked about.

When you consider what other "rock" tours were happening in 1991, 1993 and the fact that their tour was a "retirement tour" heading into Lollapalooza and supported by MTV, it's not that impressive. And to top THAT off that's gross over almost 80 shows they did, whereas most tours do half that. In 2 more years they wont even be in the top 60 tours of alltime yearly

Rush’s political view was NEVER the issue.

Rush diseased the Republican Party. He fed a massive group of millions to be rude, condescending and antagonistic toward its political opponents. He didn’t challenge people to think, he said listen to me, and I’ll tell you what to think and who to vote for. As a conservative, I have no doubt that much of the socio-political climate and extreme leftism we see today is a reaction to decades of Rush fueling his listeners to be hateful and rude adversaries.

Or, maybe his approach was the Trumpist pre-cursor to what the left was already doing to the right. He was the first on the right to say wake up or lose your liberty and fight fire with fire.

I guess I don't find using sarcasm being used as a tool on the radio to be rude and cruel.. That's just me
Sarcasm? I have no issue with sarcasm. Having a song called “Barack, the magic negro.” Mocking 12 year old Chelsea Clinton for looking like a dog. Then turning an “apology” into a chance to call her a dog again. Having an “aids update” and mocking deaths. I’m not debating his political views, many of which I agree with. I’m speaking to his tone, which was ugly. Millions of listeners feeding off this for decades and this explains the Trumpers.

Holy Cow, how on earth did this turn into a **** measuring contest over who is the largest grossing band? Who freaking cares how much money they made? From what I understand, JG didn't care if people brought recorders into their concerts. That is the measure of an artist, and not necessarily a capitalist. And 'art' is in the eye of the beholder. And I like the term 'hippie jazz' whoever came up with it... I'm gonna use that.

I'm with you.

Never understood the appeal of TGD. Over rated hippie jazz, imo.

I like a lot of the music of the era. I'd be hard pressed to single out a time I voluntarily listened to one of their songs completely through. And cannot tell you a single song title.

No, a redneck jewelry czar.
In all seriousness... New York Jews are an enigma. They vote uber liberal which I would think is in complete opposition to their political views regarding Israel. Unless of course they are TransJews. Identify as Jews but in reality are Progressive Nazi Sympathizers.

The best explanation there is that NY Jews are direct decendants of the line that both trusted and feared their captors all the way back to Egypt. Why else would they vote so liberal to be such a traditional sect.

You’re missing it. I don’t disagree on those points. I’m conservative. But if you’ll note the left has become MORE exaggerated and radical. Has the right made progress or lost ground? I think Limbaugh (among others) with their large audience, has fueled the left to be more exaggerated and radical. This didn’t happen by making good political points. It happened because of the all the ugly sketch and satirical content where he ruthlessly attacked liberals, often in a tasteless way. This isn’t one thing, but decades of antagonizing the left. So, is it any wonder we’ve seen the explosion of similar tactics by the left?

How is that working?
