Santorum to Puerto Rico: Speak English

This was not a gaffe. Not a mistake. This is pandering to the base in states coming up with low Hispanic populations.

What states would those be? You can go to the most obscure cities in the US and find first generation Hispanics.

The problem most 3rd world nations have is that the country speaks multiple languages and not everyone can understand each other.

This creates issues in the work force and trade.

There must be a language that everyone can speak in a country for the country to properly functions. If not, the country will fall into smaller segmented groups and stopping functioning as a whole.

I don't think that there is any doubt that assimilating oneself to the culture of the economy in which you participate is the brightest move. I just don't see the value in making dumb ass political statements aimed at coercing people to do so.

obscure states? You mean utah, right?

Well, I said "obscure cities". I was a missionary at one time serving the Spanish-speaking community in mostly the Middle TN area. I spent a week working with Latinos in Elkton, KY (population 1,900) and would frequently seek out Latinos in similar locales.

I thought the purpose of a politician was to do what was best for the country or state he was serving, not to be pc and cover his ass to make sure he got elected or re-elected.

The problem we have is people pandering to voters. Now, he may be pandering to voters by saying this and I'm not saying he isn't. But this country is going to be in a world of hurt if in 15 years half the country speaks English, 45 percent speaks Spanish, and 5 percent speaks anothr language.

On another hand, PR is not a state so I kinda view them differently. When you occupy a place there are consquences.

I think any government forms that are to be filled out requesting aid from the US should be in English only. You want to live here and get freebies from the US government? Learn the language.

Buck up, people. Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn. Consider yourselves lucky.

It is sad that France has grown more balls than America has in the last few decades and has the guts to say learn our language or get out.

If the first amendment means anything, then it has to mean that a person cannot be forced to use words they do not want to use.

I totally agree that people are better off using a common language. I just feel that freedom is more important that the advantages thus derived.

Besides, I wouldn't mind a balkanization of the US anyway.

And to think that the state of Tennessee voted for this moron. I have no faith in our state's citizens.

Oh no, you can't keep your native language!

(If Native Americans want to be citizens, they must speak English... makes sense.)

English is one of the most difficult languages to learn for non-native speakers. Too many damn rules, NEOCON should know that since he neglects to use any of them.

Spanish > English.

We're gutless, are we? What do you think we should do? Burn all Mexicans at stake? Force them back south at gunpoint? Segregate them?

Some of y'all are all talk.

you get all that from me saying pick one language?

wow.

jump to a very far fetch conclusion.

i personally have no probelm with any mexiacn who is here in this country working, illegal or legal.

mexicans will atleast work and arent lazy like many americans, white and black, who ***** about their jobs.

trust me if i was in an industry where mexicans could be utilized, or if the majority of this country did speak spanish, i would fire almost every one of my staff and gladly hire mexicans.

but the fact that we are gutless and cannot have the balls to either say learn english or say f it and go to spanish had put this country on a very dangerous path.

I don't think this country is going down any path specifically because there are Mexicans here that don't speak English. There are bigger problems than language.

mexicans not learning english, or having to learn english, is just a tip of the iceberg warning sign for the huge massive iceberg underneath the waters.

this country is so f'd at this point its not even funny.

no one has the guts to do what needs to be done.

seal the borders, allow every mexican in the country that is illegal but that has no criminal background and is working to become legal and a taxpayor.

legalize weed so the drug trade falls through the floor.

and walla there is suddenly more tax dollars and less crime.

gee what that so damn hard?

I'm just wondering what you mean by gutless. What in the hell is wrong with everyone being bilingual?

As stated earlier, you should take your own advice and learn English before telling everyone to speak it.
