Because of Fulmer. I agree he stay at Duke, but I think his friendship with Fulmer has kept him from coming here. The wounds have healed now, but I believe it was a factor. Winning at Duke does not mean he can win other places, but it takes a special coach to win at Duke, Stanford, Vandy ..... No , James Franklin is not special. Well, he is special, but not in the same way.

Here's what happened: (this isn't speculation)

What kept Cut from coming here was that Hamilton was going to make him keep Kippy Brown on staff as WR coach. Coach Cut refused because he wanted to bring WR coach Scottie Montgomery (Duke's Current OC). The deal was pretty much done, but this was the major hurdle neither side could agree on and Cut wasn't going to have a similar situation as he did at Ole Miss.

Ironically, Kippy gets pissed because he didn't get a fair shake as a head coaching candidate from MH and decides to be WR coach for Pete Carrol and the Seattle Seahawks. Scottie Montgomery is then offered and takes the Steelers WR coaching job and it was all for nothing. We wind up with Dooley.

Some of the guys I know on Duke's staff have told me repeatedly that the only job he would take would be the UT job, and that he and his family would love to retire in the Knoxville area.

David Cutcliff's name gaining traction on sportstalk down here. Lord that would suck. Anybody but the gators.

Cut isn't leaving Durham. He likes it there, he's successful there and I think Cut is more interested in continuing to build the program that game him his second chance at being a HC. If he wanted to leave he'd have come to UT when he was offered that job, also I think UT is the only place he'd leave Duke for anyway. Besides, Foley needs to make a splash hire, Cut, as much as I love him, isn't that guy.

I think the likely choice is the Marshall coach. They'll take a crack at several "names", but eventually fall to the "Getable" group like most schools do.

You need to do your part and start a mass campaign to float Dooley's name out there! That would be a world class hire for the Gators. C'mon man, make it happen.

Great hire for the Gators IMO. After all, he coached with Saban, has NFL experience, and has excellent coaching genetics. The only downside is that he's a below average bamboo farmer and he can't seem to find Rommel anywhere. However, that can be easily overcome by hiring the right staff.

Guy's all I did was tell you what the 620dae hosts were talking about in an interview today. The guy they were talking to is a Gator beat writer. I don't know his name. If you are not interested in hearing what folks down here are saying. I will not post it. Have a nice day.

Looking over a list of potential candidates for the Florida gig, hoping (and expecting) not to see Butch Jones name on any of them. I don't see any names that really scare me. The one that caught my attention was David Cutcliffe. I honestly don't see this happening (my personal opinion), but if it did, how would you feel about it? There aren't too many people that don't respect what Cutcliffe has done as a coach. I know I was a little disappointed when he didn't come back to Tennessee, because he would have had some success, with possibly a limited ceiling.

Here's the link with his name mentioned, with a couple other strange candidates.... Eight candidates to replace Will Muschamp at Florida - NFL.com

Cue the "They can have him" comments...

I put this in the Vols football forum because of Cutcliffe's ties to Tennessee, but if you want to move it, feel free.

I was listening to WDAE in Tampa this morning and they were going through the "no's" on the list and then came to David Cutcliffe and both of the hosts were on board with this.

I think Cut would do well at UF.

He's at Duke til he retires, I'd think.

He would teach and build their fundamentals and exploit mismatches ...his weakness at Ole Miss was recruiting...won't be a problem in Gainesville.

Maybe he could actually bring some class to that... place.

Personally, I'm fine with it though. We didn't want him so he can do whatever is best for his career.

This. Plus, that was his 1st HC gig. He would be scary at UF.

If I remember correctly, he would have come here, but he was going to come only on the condition that he could bring his entire staff with him or possibly needed a certain amount of money for his staff and UT wasn't willing to meet his demands. Maybe this is wrong, and come to think of it, Butch brought his staff with him....
