Say it Ain't So! Willie Martinez Not Returning?

Could it be that CWM wants to retire from the rigors of coaching/recruiting/etc but still wants to be around the game and moves to a front office/analyst type role and Coach Heup brings in a new db coach?
I don’t buy the “letting the contract expire” narrative. With recruiting and the portal the way it is, no way they’d have a guy in limbo like that. So I am certain he’ll be back next year.

I just find it odd he's the only without a contract after January, then add in all the dbs leaving...I know they're being recruited over, but still seems like a big coincidence.

We will see I guess.
If he planned to retire this year why would it be odd that he didn’t have a contract?

Bottom line is he will be back if he wants to be. If he doesn’t come back the replacement is already on staff right now. A plan is in place.

Well I really am not sure what this means to the program w Willie gone but for sure he will be gone and open up another spot on the coaching roster I assume? I wonder what the price of a Krystal burger is too.

I agree that something seems amiss with the “letting the contract expire” narrative. I think either they were undecided on an extension last year and are taking it one year at a time, since he’s also been flirting with retirement. Or, he’s still going to be around the program in some capacity, so they’re still letting him recruit. The amount of db leaving through the portal is a head scratcher. Best case scenario, they see the writing on the wall and they realize that these young dbs are legit and are about to take their playing time anyway. If so, we still need more depth.

If he's coming back then it's odd, unless something has been worked out and not announced like lwsvol seems to think

Some of you seem to forget that after last season he got a raise but no extension, unlike the other assistants. Is it because he planned on retiring, or Heupel simply chose not to because of performance? I don't know, and neither do you, so this he has a job if he wants it narrative is just guessing.

I want him gone, there's enough years of his time here twice and at UGA to show he won't get it done.

Said this when he was here the first time. I think that the analysis job that I believe his name is Robinson is the replacement and that is why we’re going seeing so many transferring out

New contract might be adjusted based on how well he recruits?

Who is the replacement already on staff?

Again he will be back if he wants. Rattle on though.

Then we are screwed again this year. Heupel needs to stop being so soft with his assistants will cost him his job some day.
He’s put 3 players in the NFL since rejoining our staff in 2021, 4 if Kamal Hadden doesn’t come back and it would be 5 except that Trevon Flowers played 2022 with a muscle disease which put his career on hold. Martinez has put at least one player in the NFL in 6 of the past 7 seasons and has produced 10 NFL players during that timeframe, excluding Hadden who is likely to get drafted in April.

So you are giving Martinez credit for Alonte Taylor? Whim was gonna get drafted regardless of Martinez? Tell us how bad our pass defense has been since he has been here. Also listen to what you said. He has put 3 guys in the NFL since rejoining. Even with NFL talent, our CBs have been terrible and our pass defense horrible.

You just made the case even larger for Martinez being a bad coach.

His job is to develop DBs. That’s what he does. The decision to play off the ball is not his alone. Our scoring defense is the primary objective and it hasn’t been bad, has it? I think you’ll see pass defense improve with this new wave of players. Our safeties have been a liability recently and the only corner we’ve had capable of playing man coverage the past 2 years is Hadden. And Martinez didn’t have him ready to do that until 2023.
