Say it Ain't So! Willie Martinez Not Returning?

How many of the 5 or so guys hitting the portal did WM recruit? How many did he inherit? If the room was full, he had to play the cards he was dealt. The NCAA cloud was still in play his first two classes, SO...... we will need to see how this last class and any portal guys he brought in pan out. Looks like we get a preview in the bowl, green or not. With all the portal guys out of here, he should have room to offer several and a path to playing time for guys with a couple of years under their belt. Not sure how changing the DB coach this cycle would work out. I will go with CJH's decision based on all the facts.
Ah interesting. Every other coach on our staff has been under the exact same situation and Martinez. Coach Garner didn’t inherit a stud DL. He developed them. That’s what good coaches do. Now Martinez has been coaching DBs a long time. Why can’t he develop what he has? So the only way to gage the ability of a position coach is to wait until they have elite talent around them?

Willie Martinez also coached Cam Sutton, who was definitely NOT burnt toast. Seems to me like Martinez helped Coleman and Moseley get into the league. Wasn’t Moseley a 2-star?
Cool. So he can just coast of off getting a few guys in the NFL years ago? Moseley was a 3* with a rank of 85. So it doesn’t matter what he has done the past 3 years but what he did in his previous stops?

If Martinez is still here next season then I have no faith in Heupel making us elite. If he won’t replace his buddies when they’re inadequate then he will fail.
It’s not really his buddies. He doesn’t go outside his immediate staff for hires. When someone leaves generally we already have their replacement in some sort of analyst position or similar. Worked fine with Pope, Abeln the jury is still out on and honestly the recruiting part of that doesn’t look good. Martinez is for all his other faults a good recruiter. I think he gets more time to get talent on the field. My question is why we didn’t hit the portal for DBs?

Interesting point to argue. We can talk about the past few years if you’d like. He’s put 3 players in the NFL since rejoining our staff in 2021, 4 if Kamal Hadden doesn’t come back and it would be 5 except that Trevon Flowers played 2022 with a muscle disease which put his career on hold. Martinez has put at least one player in the NFL in 6 of the past 7 seasons and has produced 10 NFL players during that timeframe. How many guys does he have to put into the league for you and the other band of ignorants to get off his a$$?

Which other group had 6 guys exit portal worthy where we evidently did not put up a fight? One on his watch. RG was not. Not sure about the LB room. With that exodus portal replacements will be key for experience. Might be tough to get HS guys to jump in if that happens. Could be why we are slow playing the portal solutions till after ESD, trying to get a young stud or two on the dotted line first.

I remember Moseley's recruitment. He had a lot of interest from Clemson but was seen as a massively development prospect, especially in the S&C department. That 160lb weight is not accurate, he was like 145.

Most schools were afraid that he'd lose his speed/skills if he put on 30lbs and it wasn't worth their time. He was not a standard 2-3* guy.

"Moseley, a 5-foot-11 freshman cornerback who enrolled in January weighing 145 pounds"

7 DBs in the portal, 2 graduated .. we are losing all but 1 starter from last year

While it seems like some have been encouraged to move on, some may be moving on likely coz position coach change .. retooling entire room including staff ..

Thoughts?

One would think something is up. Coach Player Relationships you can spin anything anyway you desire. This is probably the right assumption.

Didn’t read through the entire thread….but Willie not returning a big reason for the mass exodus in secondary?

McCoy, transfer from Oregon State, just came to UT because of WILLIE MARTINEZ. Willie is going no where guys.

And if Heupel isn't successful long-term this will be looked at.

If you think he isn't going anywhere why have they waited so long to renew his contract?

How do you know it has not been renewed?
How do you know it has?

In all seriousness, I have no inside knowledge, just seems they would have announced it by now during all the portal and recruiting movement to show stability.

I don't.

Don't need an announcement as they are talking directly with recruits / transfers. He and Heupel reeled in McCoy on a visit. Recruits don't know much about contract statuses.

What I heard a month ago was he planned to retire but then things changed. Things could change again but I have doubts as he has been recruiting really hard and successfully.

UT typically doesn't announce coaches contracts individually but as a group and most times, long after they have been finalized.

We will see how it all flushes out but IMO, he is not leaving.

I just find it odd he's the only without a contract after January, then add in all the dbs leaving...I know they're being recruited over, but still seems like a big coincidence.

We will see I guess.

I think its the end of February but I will check.. you're right, end of January

Could it be that CWM wants to retire from the rigors of coaching/recruiting/etc but still wants to be around the game and moves to a front office/analyst type role and Coach Heup brings in a new db coach?
