Well we are the 11th ranked program in wins on the country with a tradition better than most. Every team has down years but I don’t think it is unrealistic to expect 8 wins as the floor most years and 9-10 should at least be expected with even better years every 2-3 years. We went many years never winning less than 8 during the 90’s. We have the resources and fan support to be a top 10 team and sec contender most years and that should always be the standard. GBOThe answer is yes and I think as long as I've followed UT they have strived for better. But that doesn't mean it always happens.
Willie Martinez also coached Cam Sutton, who was definitely NOT burnt toast. Seems to me like Martinez helped Coleman and Moseley get into the league. Wasn’t Moseley a 2-star?I'm telling you guys like Emmanuel Moseley and Justin Coleman were burnt toast here, and have gone on to be solid NFL players.
So dramatic every day… now say we fire Martinez and lose boo or kaleb or both then you would say it was a mistake huh? At the end of the day players make plays coaches can coach but they can’t make any plays… dbs improved this year compared to last and I think they will again next year me personally I like the continuity of the staff and hope we give it another year with a true dynamic game changer at Qb… we have enough talent to be a good defense on all 3 levelsNo it is a red flag. I don’t care about other coaches. There is some smoke around Raymond possibly going to UGA. This has to do with coaching abilities. If Raymond is good enough for UGA, that means he is definitely good enough for us. Sorry but if Heupel doesn’t at least kick the tires with Raymond, I consider that a huge red flag.
Any time I read one of those articles from that particular site I feel like it's poached directly from these boards..Zach Ragan must have read my post in the recruiting forum talk thread and repurposed it is an article. He is such trash. All opinion. No actual reporting. Who said Heupel wasn’t renewing Martinez? That could absolutely still happen. Glorified blogger.
That said, I absolutely would be in favor of adding Raymond or replacing Willie with Raymond.
I have no inside info on this, but reading the tea leaves,
1) He was the only coach not extended last year.
2) NSD is almost here and he hasn’t been extended. Wouldn’t you want to extend him just to show recruits that he’ll be here? If you intend to bring him back, that is.
3) It makes complete sense to keep him until after NSD to keep the guys he recruited, then make the change. That’s how these things are often done. That was Cai Bates’ concern and likely why we didn’t land him.
This just feels like a change is coming.
I think the thread is here because fans are looking for some ray of hope that our pass defense might improve. We haven’t had good CBs since Taylor and Thompson and we were near the bottom of the SEC in pass defense last year. If Martinez is back, I guess we have to hope that Gibson and Matthews make a difference.a couple of comments..
his contract is good until end of February so he is still under contract.
he could have already been extended and it hasn't been announced. No reason too. I know what you say, but recruits don't keep up with that. they listen to what they are told.
Typically, Tennessee takes as long as 6 months to finalize contracts. In fact, that is the norm. So we may not hear anything until May or later.
Willie Martinez will be the CB coach next season. In fact, there will be no coaching changes on the staff...
I can't believe this thread is still active...
When you have an offense that goes as fast as ours it is kinda important to score a lot of points. The games we lost was more from a lack of offense. Why are so many on the DB coach and DC vs the WR coach and OC?I think the thread is here because fans are looking for some ray of hope that our pass defense might improve. Martinez has put several players in the NFL and he has coached All-American DBs. He has turned guys like Theo Jackson and Kamal Hadden (presumably) into NFL draft picks when previous coaches didn’t have them on that path.I think the thread is here because fans are looking for some ray of hope that our pass defense might improve. Results matter. The WR coach gets a pass for the performance of the WRs in the past couple years. There's also been a lot of injuries to that corps this year. When you have an offense that goes as fast as ours it is kinda important to score a lot of points. How many of the 5 or so guys hitting the portal did WM recruit? How many did he inherit? If the room was full, he had to play the cards he was dealt. The NCAA cloud was still in play his first two classes, SO...... we will need to see how this last class and any portal guys he brought in pan out. Looks like we get a preview in the bowl, green or not. With all the portal guys out of here, he should have room to offer several and a path to playing time for guys with a couple of years under their belt. Not sure how changing the DB coach this cycle would work out. I will go with CJH's decision based on all the facts. Results matter. I've seen the OC catching some heat this year. They would probably get more heat if more people thought the OC was actually calling the plays.
The pass defense has been wretched for the past two years. It's Martinez' responsibility to recruit and develop these kids.

If Martinez is still here next season then I have no faith in Heupel making us elite. If he won’t replace his buddies when they’re inadequate then he will fail.a couple of comments..
