What is your opinion of the effectiveness of corporal punishment, ie paddling the behinds of those that deserve it?

Well....if you take a child who is CONSISTENTLY and FAIRLY disciplined with corporal punishment at HOME, it will also be effective at school. If, however, you apply it to a child who is inconsistently disciplined or God forbid, abused, it might work for an hour or two or until the pain/shame/anger subsides and "Johnny Doe" is back to his old behavior. It's just like the prayer in schools issue. Instead of pushing for tougher discipline policies/prayer in SCHOOL, we should first try to get these methods established in the HOME. Parents are a child's first and most important teachers. I cannot emphasize that enough.

Have you experienced parents with bad behavior children coming in and blaming their problems on the schools instead of taking responsibility themselves?

Unfortunately, yes. The funny thing about discipline is that the child is going to adopt the attitude of the parent. Any time I have ever had a child whose parents supported me and handled any problems/complaints with me in a mature, professional manner, discipline problems with that child were few. But, on the flip side, if a parent was constantly telling their child what an idiot I was, or how I was too strict or gave too much homework, etc. my influence on that child was weakened. Kids are always going to believe mama and daddy and if mama says their teacher is a stupid fool, it MUST be true.

I teach Spelling, Language Arts (grammar/writing) Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science for a self-contained 3rd grade class. Here is my favorite funny story...

One day during my second year of teaching, I was instructing the class in science about the differences in mammals and other animals. To bring closure to the lesson I was calling out animals at random and the students would respond with "mammal" or "amphibian" or "reptile" etc. One of my little girls was noticeably off-task, so to get her back into the lesson I said "Janet, what's a chicken?" She looked me right in the eye and said "Delicious!"

LIO what do you think about home schooling?

I think home schooling should be more than keeping a child home and making them read tons of pace books and filling in a million cloze tests. I am aware that a public education might expose a child to more than the parent/guardian bargained for, but so can going to a video store or Wal-Mart. I am not against home schooling if it is truly done right, but I have taken my share of kids from home / Christian schools who were sadly lacking in social and academic skills compared to their peers. The greatest Teacher of all time said "We are in the world, but we are not of the world." I think it is the right of every parent to choose how their child is educated, but I also think accountability should play a HUGE part.

That's just MY 2 cents. And it isn't even worth THAT much.

:)

Did you use your old school paddles on your own kids?

My child has received two paddlings at school. Her first one was administered by me with the principal as a witness. The last one was by the principal with me as a witness. It was very hard for me to do, but sometimes you just gotta practice what you preach. She lived and I guarantee you she will NEVER sit on a water fountain again.

That is an excellent point.

Have you ever eaten at Bell's in Henderson? Have you ever had BBQ from Jack's Creek?
